Both. This sort of thing is actually quite common with end of the world shit. Remember the LHC stupidity a year or 2 ago when some moron who didn't understand physics said it would end the world? There were suicides then as well IIRC.

It's been the same old thing over and over since the turn of the millennium, which was the first major apocalypse event I was ever aware of.  I don't even feel like making fun of it anymore.

I am happy to note that I haven't met a single person who actually believes in this one, only heard about them.

I think they operate on the assumption that they are facing a less pleasant death experience, which is best avoided.
