Yep, three times a day at ~8 hour intervals. Just picked up a power inverter from amazon, so I'll be able to run the (self-built) incubator in the car. Since the DIY incubator will only require ~25w or so, it should run just fine and dandy on the 175w max inverter I got.

Hope you're prepared for an inevitably awkward conversation if you should get pulled over by the cops.

A mallard is a dabbling duck, right? Can he ever become a legendary duck?
*Wince* *Cringe*

and that's coming from someone in a family of Expert Punsters
He must be the lame duck of the family.

You certainly laid an egg with that one.

If you're raising a duck, I have to ask you this:  Got any grapes?

Does your new duck incubator work with an incandescent lightbulb? Cuz you're gonna get a huge electric bill.

Nah. It's equivalent to keeping one lamp on 24/7 (and a very low wattage lamp, at that). I'd be surprised if it was more than $5/month. My 51" plasma doesn't even eat up more than $5/month.

Same.

On a mostly tangental note, lightning dire ducks would be awesome.

Sadly, I think Toast has expired. Candling is not looking good.

Really, he had a crapshot from the start, all the odds were against him, etc. Still, makes me feel bad.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Girlfriend went from being extremely sad upon hearing the news to suddenly being excited over the prospect of performing a post-mortem dissection of the egg to see if she could tell why it died. Science majors freak me out.

Since I've already bought all the equipment to build an incubator, and I'd like to increase my experience level to 'Dabbling Electrician' anyway, I think I'll still give it a shot once I'm back in Michigan. We're thinking quails. Small and not extremely noisy.

Well, maybe you shouldn't have named them while in the egg. Until they're born, they're basically Egg #1 and Egg #2 and so on. Otherwise you're just setting yourself for disappointment.

Next time wait until they actually hatch before giving them cute names. Sorry dude.

Aw, sorry to hear that.

But, as you say, he had pretty abysmal odds to begin with.

As a warning, quails have this loud warbly chirp... I don't know how often they do it nor under what conditions if any.  Might be different with breeds though.

There's good eating on them though. You are planning to raise them for eating, yes?
