I'm not being sarcastic, hasn't this filtered through in America or is it just us Brits who see it. What do you think the first gulf war was about? Oil. The Americans couldn't have a country that is almost drowning in oil be taken over by one of their enemies.

I'm pretty sure I saw some oil being tapped in Iraq on the news once. It was only shown for about 2.5 seconds.

This isn't about seeing what the media wants you too see. It's about looking at all of the evidence and making inferences. Yes, we thought he had WMDs and yes Suddam was using being an absolute tyrant, but the west haunt been involved with other, worse contries such as DPR Korea or Belarus

I know this has absolutely nothing to do with the topic, but I hardly ever believe what the media says. It's all what they want you to see and hear, usually none of the real story.

Must be a strange world for you then. "Where did that building come from? They said they were building it on the news last month so it must've sprung forth from the ground without a warning?"

Uh... Okay, I think you're taking this a little too seriously.  Trust me, there's not an American citizen reading this who doesn't know there's a difference between the officially stated reason why the Iraq War started (incredibly specious evidence of connections between the Hussein government and al-Qaeda at large), and the far more complicated composite/real reason, which yeah pretty much everyone knows and agrees was oil.

That said, you don't have to travel very far outside of the relatively well-informed and affluent American audience here to find other Americans who earnestly believe that Saddam Hussein was directly responsible for 9/11.  I'll bet you wouldn't have to look too much harder for a Briton who believes the same.  That's just how ignorance works.

The flying -automatic rifle round- strikes the terrorist leader in the head, shattering the skull and tearing apart the brain!

Yes, this was the first thing I thought of.

I understand Aqizzar but that was juat the impression I was give by some of the previous posters. Also, there is no half way in Britain. People either know most of the real story or are just full if apathy towards current affairs and politics

Hopefully it won't follow with

Yeah yeah, we all noticed the little snip on Wikipedia.  Suffice to say, I don't put a lot of stock in the earth-shaking threats of a maniac, who on 183 separate occasions was faced with "tell us something interesting or we will drown you", especially now that whatever "intel" that greasy pile sputtered out is now at least seven years old.  C'mon, this is al-Qaeda we're talking about.   Those guys were never known for their subtlety.  If they had a nuclear device at any point in the past decade, they would have used it by now.

He wasn't already dead? This all seems a little far fetched, as if it was just to put an end to the hysteria, as someone said earlier in the thread.

...Because America is not only entity in the world al-Qaeda ever had a beef with.  Y'know, tunnel bombing in England, transit bombing in Spain, God knows how many other acts just in the past decade, let alone before that.  Al-Qaeda declared war against basically everyone and everything, and Europe was always their more immediate target, not least because it's easier to reach, and many European countries have large populations of disaffected Muslims that radical groups have had easy pickings with.

+1

I can't bring myself to believe that they would've had a sleeper cell with any sort of WMD and not shit their pants trying to deploy it faster.

Yes Phmcw. I think it is a valid question. Sure, killing him will not put a end to the war. And it certainly would have been better to not kill him. But, the true question you should be debating is: Is letting him be alive and free better then killing him?

Please... they got his house surrounded, and he was nearing ninety and in very bad health. They were frigging navy Seal, don't tell me they can't arrest an old man without shooting him.

The nature of this conflict makes it so hard to tell how the Al-Queta cells will react to this.
