Looking for a laptop
« on: April 28, 2011, 07:50:22 am »

I don't have any specifics on budget yet, but I have a few months before I really need it. I'll assume maybe £200-£300 max for the moment. It's intended to be for university, so it doesn't exactly need to be able to run Crysis. UK delivery required, for obvious reasons. I also don't give a damn what OS it runs. Anyone got any suggestions?

I could install AlfOS on my old laptop and ship it to you.

Okay, correction: I'd like a fully functioning OS

Go for a netbook. A decent one will likely be around 200 pounds, I think

That seems inconvenient, but yea in America a good net-book runs 250-300.
Research the Hard drive as that is the most likely component to fail .

And make sure the power cord comes with some sort of warranty. Those things always fuck up. >.> <.<

I broke the power chord of my first netbook. Mostly because I insisted on rolling it on itself, which put a strain on the cable. When in doubt, don't do that. It's better that the cable gets tangled than risking it breaking

I just got my partner a Samsung N130 Netbook from https://www.studentcomputers.co.uk for < £200. It's as-good-as-new, if I'd not told her it was refurbed she wouldn't have known. Can happily run windows 7, has about 5 hours of battery life and is perfect for her to work with. I really can't recommend them enough.

But it should be easy enough not to use them in a way you feel is dumb while letting other people have their hilarity.

IMO he should go for a dual-core netbook. They're a little more expensive, but not very much.

What is your intended major at school? If it is computer science or graphic design your needs will be higher, whereas literature of business need little more than the ability to run OpenOffice. I have an EEEpc Netbook for programming and Office use when I need true mobility. I get 7 hours of battery while connected to the internet and almost 9 without. It's not a gaming rig and it's main use is portability and long battery life which are paramount to being used in school. The price will surely fit your budget. Anything above a 1005 series is great, just be sure to choose one with a matte screen so you don't suffer glare issues.
If you want something a little more entertainment capable I would recommend something like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-Satellite-C660-155-Notebook-Processor/dp/B004K6MENQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304695251&sr=8-1      note that it has integrated intel graphics which is a problem for a lot of modern gaming.

if you want something to game on it will cost at least $500 euros

I'm not looking for a gaming machine, I have my desktop for that. I'm taking Computer Games Technology (we don't do the whole major thing over here).

I code on my netbook and love it. The i3 of the Toshiba will compile faster and it has more RAM. It will just come down to what size you want to work with. 10" for portability or 15 inch for slightly less portability and higher cost.

you can run games on a netbook, for the record. I've managed to run Civ IV in mine.

I'm going to second hemmingjay's suggestions.
Also, if you want a solid build, ASUS and Toshiba are the best.
And HP and Dell are the worst.

If you don't like netbooks for some reason (like screen size or keyboard size... turns me off), be sure to check out auctions. eBay regularly sells old laptops for ~$200-$300 dollars in the US.
