So my miner is walking down the hallway, everything is fine, la la la, when he suddenly starts bleeding and dies within steps. Nothing at all happened to him, never breached the caverns, everyone's happy. Went back to backups lots of times and the same thing happens. No battle reports, etc. He's not diseased, examined everyone nearby for blood or anything, absoutely nothing~

Have you fought any forgotten bests, titans, or demons?  One of them might have released some poisonous substance (blood, extract, venom, spit...) that this dwarf was exposed to.  If it caused massive bleeding and had a delayed effect, that would explain it.

I am lnfiltrator, although I don't think we ever played together. I still play 2142 with friends occasionally. Pity for the botched Steam release, DICE managed to kill the best game they developed so far...

My avatar is peculiar! 

I installed the 1.51 first patch but then DICE released another one with a fix on it.  Putting it on would mean I'd have to uninstall the game, reinstall it and repatch it - and to be honest, I've got bigger fish to fry.  Most of my time nowadays is spent playing GT5, L4D2 or TF2.  Considering that scuttlebutt says the 2142 servers are mostly deserted and finding something both populated that that's not Piece of Shit Karkand 2142, I have little interest in even attempting to play.

(Yeah chances are low we played or will ever play together, since you are based in the UK.  Gaming overseas brings less than stellar pings!)

My bet is-- a sadistic ghost did it--they leave no combat reports and usually cause terrible crippling wounds--can you check the miner to see if he is torn up.  On the other hand, if the miner is melted, my guess is, you were generating liquids with dfhack and there is a heat pocket.
