This was kind of counter-productively worded.

If another option was provided that wasn't more oppressive (SecuROM for example) that was viable for me, I'd leap at the opportunity. As is, I'll deal with the pest that I'm finding Steam to be.
SecuROM is LESS oppressive? Steam doesn't have an activation limit, and many games that are on Steam don't actually require Steam to be running in the first place.

*cough* SecuROM's an example of something more oppressive.
The way that it's worded (and calling Steam a pest) looks like he's saying that Steam is more oppressive. It's worded really weirdly, so really it's anybody's guess.

I just don't want it on Steam because Steam takes goddamn ages to boot games up after I click 'em.  I've got it and use it, but the one little aspect is kinda annoying.

Unless their physics modelling is far more capable than what we've seen in the LPs, or just plain coded poorly, it may require a hefty CPU, but I doubt it. RAM may be an issue, but probably not. Someone did some estimations earlier in the thread and guessed somewhere around 500-600MB of RAM for a large world, which isn't bad at all.
The pre-alpha uses just a small part of my single-core CPU, and is very light on RAM. I am not sure if it stayed, but I guess so. The game has quite a simple physics simulation, and you won't get a waterfall or shifting temperature, so if you can run DF, you should probably be okay.

I really don't understand this aversion to Steam. It doesn't use enough resources to impact gameplay in any significant way. In fact, it uses less resources than Firefox, and a lot of people alt-tab in games to look up information online anyway. The social aspect is completely optional, you don't need to add friends much less communicate with them. You can set it so it doesn't open during system start-up, which pretty much every reasonable application can do anyway. Even the auto-updates for games can be turned off.
Part of it is residual anger from Steam's birth.  Valve retroactively converted their then-flagship product, Half Life, into a Steam-only game, and the Steam versions of that time were pretty hostile to LAN parties.

Half Life 1 is quite elderly now -- Steam would have been a bigger leech on it, relatively speaking, than on a modern gluttonous game.

I dodged it myself.  I only play LAN parties or with bots, so the shutdown of the previous CD-key verifier "WON" didn't impact me.

"You won't get constant waterfalls" is what you mean, I think. The current version still has flowing water.

There's also no word on whether the ocean to one side of the map is infinite(ly refilling).

Yes, I meant that I've yet to see an infinite water source, and there are no pumps to move the water up, so it should stop eventually. At least after playing DF it's something I expect a heavy CPU usage from, hehe.

At least lava doesn't seem to do temperature updates.  ;)

Man, see me wincing. This is almost painful... another leak. Considerably more recent. From the comments I've been seeing, it's apparently circa Pbat's version with the star-bugged large worlds. Folks are apparently playing it over hamachi. My heart (and money, eventually) go out to the poor guys :-\

Hope this doesn't delay the official release...

Actually, given the static nature of most of their world, doing some localized form of cellular automation (I mean, in addition to liquid flows) wouldn't be that much of a performance hit. I think that way, at least. In most cellular automata where we see temperature exchange (FSG, wxSand, BSand, Powder Game), the most CPU load comes from constant interaction between particles, checking what particle contacts what. Adding one byte of data per cell to the footprint for temperature monitoring would be the biggest performance hit here, the CPU cycles needed to check temperature interactions wouldn't be all that great.

edit: Another leak? Well damn. If it's recent it might actually hurt sales of the devs. So much for keeping the testing to themselves.

From what Ive been reading so far, the "leak" is either a complete hoax or a version that some dude enhanced from the previous source code leak.

No, it's a real version, and it makes me sad.
You've got to be careful when you share early game builds for "advertisement". You have to be careful with that.

I mean, come on, Pbat is a nice guy, but he could easily forget it in some laptop, or some of his friends could sneak on his PC... Or other places whici used Terraria to make videos could leak it easily. They had to make a separate build with a time limit or something, and it still could be hacked... They almost "asked" for it with a lot of side Let's Players.

Mm... from what I picked up in a couple threads, someone on the dev side just put things in a, uh, silly place -- or something along those lines -- and someone with some savvy and perhaps a bit of ill will nabbed it up and spread it out.

I'm definitely kinda' weirded out about the whole thing. It seems like th'kinda' shitstorms that've been kicked up around Terraria is stuff that normally limits itself to the sort that goes after commerical games, not th'umble indie stuff. I guess people're people, and it must bode well in some sense for the fiscal viability of indie-style development (wider customer base, I guess), but it's always kinda' sad to see th'old ivory tower (or dusty basement in this case, heh) being invaded by the masses... well, less appreciative of what's being done on the production side, anyway.

But whatever, I suppose. What I've been seeing (there were a couple livestreams up a bit ago, at the very least) so far has just fully cemented (even more than previously!) my desire to give the makers of this game money. They deserve it, yo'.

Yeah, its the real version. Im definitely going to buy this to help these guys out. Leaks like this make me happy and sad at the same time.

In my opinion they should release it asap to try and make money instead of everyone getting the leak.

I may or may not be playing the leaked version.

Totally buying it once it comes out for real, though. Redigit seems like one of those guys I can relate to.
