OMG. I so want this game.

<begin pointless rant>
Now, don't go sniping at me, this is not a eighth as bad as what happens at the MC forums if you announce something that MC fans really want. You get those little diamond emoticons they have, lined up, people saying things like "[diamond emoticon x 50] to you" and "OMG THIS IS AWESOME [notch face here]". Sorry to rant... but seriously I don't know what makes those forums so bad, unless perhaps Minecraft attracts the kind of people who do that.
<end pointless rant>

Seriously, this game looks *awesome*. Really. I cannot wait for these guys to come out with it! I guess I'll have to... *sigh* I am so getting this and playing this once it comes out!!!

Obligatory watch post.

This and starfarer seem to be my big anticipation games for the present.

One thing i don't like in minecraft and its bugs me also in this game, is how easily can you gain height by jumping and building blocks beneath you. For me its bit like cheating i would like to work more with grappling hooks, ladders and elevators of some sort...  :-\ Clonk was perfect in this.
There isn't really any way to manage that without crazy computations that will only frustrate. I think there will be some shenanigans with the background wall where you can't build a block with nothing next to it unless you have one, and you can't place a background wall unless it's connected to another piece of terrain. That's the extent that you'll get.

 I kinda hope you'll be able to place torches on the background wall though. Normal torches can be knocked over by a sword, candles or other lighting stuff will not be affected. Could be interesting.

I will say that PBat really needs to get over the "This is a rip off of minecraft" because he spends a long time commenting on it in two videos and frankly he doesn't explain himself well enough.

At minimum I'd say Terraria is "Inspired" by minecraft.

I'd say it's more Inspired by Worms.

Or, you know, Clonk.

Oh man, the waterfalls in Part 19 were pretty cool.

Memories of fun in Dwarf Fortress.

And the explosives.

I think I figured out the one part about the broadsword arc that bothered me. It reverses the "high ground" rule. The bottom part of the swing barely goes below where the character stands, which makes higher ground a disadvantage. It seems like that is being compounded by the fact that half of the time you're spelunking, so enemies are almost constantly below you. It's not really unfair, though. You've got bombs, arrows, bombs, dynamite, bombs and who knows what else to make up for it. I'm still hoping for more melee weapon variety, though.

As for the whole minecraft thing... You can't blame people for making the analogy, considering how many basic things in the game are virtually the same. Terrain is formed of blocks, darkness is a big factor so you end up making and placing torches all over the places, basic tool progression is very similar. I could go on with little nitpicks, but I don't see a reason to. I think the reason people are getting so hung up on these little things is that minecraft is incredibly bare-bones when it comes to in-game features, and people seem to associate these simple game mechanics as unique aspects of minecraft. I disagree with people saying it's a rip-off, but I can still understand it to some degree.

It is hard for me to consider anything that takes the basic core elements of a game and adds onto them to make a new and unique game to be a rip off.

There are many games with very similar gameplay to eachother (Dune 2 and CnC or for one not made by the same company... Ultima Underworld and Lands of Lore) and even whole genres (point and click adventure games).

Though still it shouldn't have ruffled Pbat, who is actually getting a bit annoying in his later commentary, that much.

Also I am starting to dislike the term Randomised and generated more and more. A lot of games with random generated don't really produce anything of significance relative to another product of generation.  So far this holds true for Terraria. It isn't a fault with Terraria, but it is something I am noticing as a whole.

....What? Random and generated isn't random or generated if it doesn't mean your standards?

The term we are all looking for is "Procedurally generated." Where content is generated on the fly as needed and there is a random aspect to it, but there are a lot of rules used to turn random numbers into content within a range and shape we want in relation to other content.

And PBat is a bro Minecraft homeboy, he would never start hatin' on such lovely games.

 Although that would be nitpicking and besides the point.
