4x games suggestions
« on: April 16, 2011, 09:22:46 pm »

I would like to have 2 kind of suggestions:

1st: Is there a 4x more based on economy than war?

2st: Space! (and not too much complex D:)

Thanks!

What do you mean by more based upon? Do you mean that fighting is optional and trade is a viable macro level method for success, or do you mean fighting is only a cursory and peripheral feature that doesn't impact much of the game, even if there are several wars in progress?

I tried playing a freeware 4x and i kinda got attacked early, a game more based on economy would be like... you can develop yourself by economy and build, make trade agreements, and combat be very optional... something around that

The Haegemonia series can be quite complicated in terms of getting your economy to run well. The combat is a bit lack luster, and it is necessary for the majority of the game, but I've always found setting up my planets the most fun to come out of that game.

There's also Aurora, yes combat will be a major part of it, mostly for defence purposes, but the number of options given to you by the economy is fantastic. There exists almost two kinds of economies IIRC, one is a functional military one, and the other civilian which isn't in your control. Along with the same idea as Aurora, there's Distant Worlds that also has an independant civilian, or largely automated economy. You can influence what your empire does and can use direct control, but due to the huge size of your empire it's quite likely that the former is what you'll be doing most of the time.

I thought about Aurora, but it seemed quite complex and i didn't found a wiki, so it quite demotivated me to play it, but do you think that i should give it a try?

If you can get it to run, sure. Though be warned, it's like dwarf fortress in its complexity, if not even more so due to the theme of being put in a sci-fi environment instead of a simple medieval one.

Is it possible to have some sort of carrier within a carrier for dealing with superior missile tech? I'm thinking about putting several small carriers into one big throw away carrier, and several smaller carriers inside of those, and then perhaps if there's enough room, some into those, and finally one or two fighters.

The point is... I took a good time to get the idea of DF and i still fail a bit when playing, but i should give it a try. Thanks!

By all means UNFORTUNATELY... Spore is very economy based in the space phase.

The problem with high economic focus is for the most part when you have free access to any number of planets then things become less about individual resources and more about your ability to collect it.

I don't think there's a single person here who doesn't fail when playing DF.

I would definitely recommend Aurora, but to be bluntly honest I find it twice as hard to get into as Dwarf Fortress. Once you're into it, however, you can pull marathons on that game and not get bored.
