I had one of my legendary miners safe my fortress. Fairly early in the game a forgotten beetle beast arrived and began to tear apart my copper armed military (like i said, early). I quickly drafted some "volunteers" which happened to include my miner.

He promptly waddled up to the beast and with his first swing put a pick through it's brain. One hit forgotten beast kill.

He named the pick too. Multigrasp.

Multigrasp?
I guess he used both hands.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Pick.

I made a quick 8 unskilled pick-wielding dwarf vs 8 unskilled axe-wielding dwarf, no equipment apart from iron weapons.

The pickmen won easily.

Also, picks are generally more useful, and easier to train, and Miner's a skill used for combat unlike Woodcutter.

You can also train your miners in danger rooms, unlike woodcutters, and they will gain mining skill easily.

Sadly, arena !!SCIENCE!! is limited here due to the fact that you can't give arena dwarfs the mining skill. There are some tests you can do though.

Experiment One:
Each Match:
10 dwarfs/ no armor/ no skills/ steel axes
vs
10 dwarfs/ no armor/ no skills/ steel picks

The pick teams win 7/10 matches.

Picks. They are dwarvenly and have double usage.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

More tests:

Testing with "axepicks" (modded weapons with stats of picks but modded using the axe skill for ease of testing)

Test1 teams:
10 dwarves/grandmaster all skills/ full bronze armor/ addy axepicks
vs
10 dwarves/grandmaster all skills/ full bronze armor/ steel axepicks

steel axepicks win 6/6 matches

Test2 teams:
10 dwarves/grandmaster all skills/ full bronze armor/ steel axepicks
vs
10 dwarves/grandmaster all skills/ full bronze armor/ silver axepicks

steel axepicks again win 6/6 matches.

So (against bronze armor, with grandmasters on both sides) steel picks beat (drastically) both silver picks and addy picks.

Picks. They are dwarvenly and have double usage.

Axes are also dwarvenly (Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu!) and also have double usage. They are the most effective weapon against those sneaky trees.

But yeah, from the rest of the thread it sounds like picks are better overall.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Thats quite interesting findings.
So for hammers we want silver(barring mood platinum hammers), for axes adamantium, and for picks steel?
I assume that spears and short swords are also best made out of adamantium.
What about maces? Also silver?

Never said axes weren't dwarvenly. And stone is a lot more usefull than wood.

5 unarmored peasants w/ copper picks

vs

5 unarmored peasants w/ large copper daggers

Daggers won without any losses 3 times in a row

vs

5 unarmored peasants w/ large copper daggers

Round 1: Daggers beat picks w/ 2 survivors
Round 2: Picks beat daggers w/ 2 survivors
Round 3: Daggers beat picks w/ 3 survivors

Daggers seem to be an extremely effective weapon for unskilled dwarves against unarmored opponents
