Do you have mud in your fortress? Trees can grow in mud.

Soil might be fertile too for trees, but I don't know yet. I haven't reached the caverns yet on my updated fortress.

Once you breach the caverns underground plants will grow anywhere there is soil or mud.   You can clear muddy floors by having your engravers smooth them (assuming they're not already smoothed).  Build floors or paved roads over soil to prevent tree growth.  Roads take fewer materials to build, but I'm usually up to ears in junk stone and masons, so I find the floors faster and easier to build.

It is. Trees will grow in soil.

Then there's the problem.

Yeah, I just updated, and I had to restart my fortress in order for updates to kick in like beekeeping. I lost all my 20 war elephants  :'(

Resolve it by placing floors in your fortress. I do this for all my fortresses, already. Then again, I like my civilization to be the best, most advanced, and happiest because I care. It's all about the greater good.

Are you building a fortress in soil? Because yes you will get all sorts of underground plants growing in underground soil. They will also grow on muddy stone.

Dry stone will never have any plant growth on it.

Why would you want to cover the soil? Just put doors on all the entrances to rooms so trees don't trap people inside their rooms and workshops, and you have easy access to wood and plant.

Regular woodcutting, plant gathering, and traffic should keep that down.

Or better yet, just have your entrance as stairs down until you reach stone, and build your entire fortress in stone layers. It's more fortress value, no need to worry about plants unless you spill water everywhere, and you can engrave it too.

If you can carve out a large enough area, you should take advantage of this-the moss serves as pasture for grazers, and alternately you can use it as a mushroom tree farm. I actually was trying to set this up in my last fort with an elaborate flooding system...had to abandon that fort due to FPS issues (caused by goblins, as I noted before-or maybe by the sheer load of blocks my masons were producing to clean the place up), but it's incredibly useful when you're sieged in.

So moss will grow on muddy stone in the new version after breaching caverns? Does it grow as fast as regular grass?

In addition, is there a way to limit the number of tree's that grow in your base? ie, if theres a hard limit to the number of trees and there's ton elsewhere will make less in your muddied fort?
