Idlers...
« on: April 10, 2011, 04:31:58 am »

This is the closest to a successful fort I've ever come to, with about 130 pop, half decent military and close magma. Now I'm curious as to what to do with all these idlers.

I really don't want to spend forever and a half giving them all a specific, probably unnecessary, professions.

Any tips and tricks are also appreciated ^_^

I'm just going to sit myself here and watch the replies, apart from picking up goblinite, I normally get between 40-70 idlers in my fort, and I know I'm doing something horribly wrong. I'm planning on getting some more farmers probably, I'm making lots of cloth and dying it, and I have a few stone crafters but honestly, I don't need any more. Coke isn't too plentifull so I plan on finding magma then really kicking up the metal industry.

So, on that note, you should get a load of magma forges and make as much coke from any lignite and coal, then get steel up and running...

Got plenty of coke, magnetite and magma nice n close to the surface, but haven't found any flux stone yet, which is incredibly frustrating because I have everything perfect except that >.>

Make a 10-z high grand hall with a 3-z high labyrinth suspended from the ceiling and made of glass for prisoners to get killed in. Nothing like seeing goblin intestines splatter against a glass wall while eating your cat biscuits.

Dig out a huge cavern with an enclosed stairway leading down the center then fill the cavern with magma to serve as your main fort entrance.

Make all of your exports from unusual materials for a challenge (ie no stonecrafting).

Create an elaborate tomb for each of your dwarfs.

Migrate your fort down to the third cavern for Fun.

Kill a load of elves and humans to start a war.

I have no magma, and there are a few veins of coal to mine out but they're all close to my tombs and bed rooms.... I'm planning on mining down, clearing out a level [Foolish, I know, FPS drop] but I'm going to do it! I NEED METAL!

You have no magma?! Then I can confirm you're definitely doing something horribly wrong!  :o

Also, stop using traps to defend your entrance, that's no Fun at all (if you have 40-70 idlers I assume you don't have much of a military).

Challenging yourself to only grow underground crops for 1 month of the year and not using plump helmets also makes things more interesting.

Decided I'd finally open the door to HFS via the masterfully made scimitar. Was entertaining, to say the least

I don't want a challenge, I want EVERYTHING. I'm still trying to set them up, it's kinda pathetic really... I'm certainly digging down to get magma and caverns soon though... goodbye FPS :'(

Deathcount?
Had 120 dwarves when it opened, 5 minutes later I have 7 =D. Was sad when I realised they had trapavoid, was thinking the survivors could have pet demons...

I have to say, they reduced my framrate from 50 to 7 at one point...But it's back up there now

Last time i breached the HFS, my FPS went down to about 1, and after the demons kill everyone but this one guy that i accidentally locked up in his room, it went to 0

If you're doing enough mining then pretty much all of your idle dwarves will be occupied hauling stone to stockpiles (get masons to make the junk stone into blocks for storage reasons). If you're not doing enough mining, then makes some of them miners. And you can assign the rest to masonry, it's marvellous what you can build with enough masons.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The path finding algorithm gives a worst  case when you can't reach the destination. Without some sort of limit  it will go through every accessible node.

In case you still have a problem...
Draft them (metaphorically) into a masonry force. Have them build a massive execution tower, a dozen z-levels above ground and a score below. The tower will be used to see how deep a goblin needs to drop to get it to burst into Xgoblin skullXs and Xgoblin meatXs and such!

Then calibrate it with your next migrant wave and any leftover idlers.

I have an upper fort and a lower fort - keeps idlers busy hauling stuff downwards (and sometimes upwards)
