VN is VN. Its no longer part of this forum, expect in spirit.

Plus we dont really have any radicals here. So its a chill atmosphere.

What was VN?

I tried IA, but:

A relativly small userbase: Not many trolls know about us

As far as freeware game communities go, isn't DF pretty huge? This seems like a pretty active forum.

It was everything the "Finally..." section is now, except all in one place, and with heaps of random threads inbetween. I may not remember correctly, but IIRC Forum Games and Roleplaying was the first section to branch off from VN, moving the bulk of play-by-post games (including the ever-prospering RTDs) into a separate space. Then, everything else got separated, then VN was locked, and nuked in short order. Basically, what we had was a sewer pipe, which we installed filters in, sifted the clean waters from, and then walled off, rerouting filtered waters to new pipes. In my opinion, completely killing the place wasn't really necessary (possible bandwidth problems notwithstanding), but the forum is better off without a place where anything can be posted without restrictions.

Yeah, I would say we are pretty huge. Right now, certainly not a peak time, we have over three hundred people on. I would not be surprised if say... A thousand were on at peak times.

It is some what huge. We have been referenced in World of Warcraft and Super Scribblenaughts, so safe so say DF has established it's place in the gaming world. Despite this, it has a similar position to the works of Lewis Carroll, in that the amount of people who know about the works, and have even dabbled a little, far outweigh the amount of people who are familiar enough with the game to feel comfortable to click the link to the forums.

While this is a very active forum, it is still limited in it's number of users. For example, I know to some level most of the people on this thread, and I'm sure at least one or two of you know me. Other forums out there work more like a public shout box, where relationships do not extend beyond the scope of the thread.

So, for example, I know Aqizzar is a highly intelligent and respected user, I am somewhat sure that Realmfighter is insane, and I know how MoM gets so many freaking posts.

Edit:
Yeah, I would say we are pretty huge. Right now, certainly not a peak time, we have over three hundred people on. I would not be surprised if say... A thousand were on at peak times.
2228 was the most we ever hit, and as I recall that was the day we upgraded from d40 to what was called d2010.

Didn't the forums get really hard to get into because of how many people were on?

Um.. No. Our max happened only about four months ago, DF2010 had it's one year birthday eight days ago.

Well, in the past three hours 30 new members have joined, but slightly more then half of them will never make a single post. In addition to that, less then about a third will ever make it out of escaped lunatic status.

So, there has always been a massive number of people, just most are inactive I guess.

In retrospect I do not think that answered your question.

You do realise that... 24 of the 30 newest members are spambots?

And... What makes you say that?

We get like one bot a week maybe, not three hundred a day.

Ah, I have the exact reason for this. It happened because our forum was linked on the front page of reddit. So basically it was caused by reddittiers(yes, reddittiers) coming to look at our site, and subsequently swamping it.

The vast majority of bots don't post. They're vastly skewing the forum population numbers.

I say "24 of the newest 30" because I read through the newest members list and counted 24. Try it yourself.

They are all spambots, but Toadys 'arcane field of confuse spambot' means most of them lose the int score to even post, while the few that do will sometimes even forget links.

By Armoks beard! You guys must have cleaned up the place in a hurry while I was out. The wreckage must have been astounding. Did we lose anything we needed?

Man that's creepy. It's like they make an account to just... stare at us.

Only our pride, fortunately.
