Its a beam that could conceivably shoot at any object, it could be a gold mailbox, or a gold chair.  Shoes is just an expression from gambling, as in games of chance some people play occasionally with Dice (like here , what, an allusion???).  Now none of those are particularly useful being gold, its more the element itself that's key.   Sure platinum is worth more, if you want to go for broke make 'em plutonium, use SUPERSCIENCE to weaponize them, and then HOLY SHIT WEAPON GRADE NUCLEAR CAPABLE SNEAKERS.
