Hmm, well what do you know. I suppose I should take this post down. How does Good Old Games operate? As far as I was aware, the company that held the rights to LoM was long gone.

EDIT: Hmm, they are charging for Master of Magic as well. That leads me to believe they are only charging people for the download and they don't actually own the rights to the game?

Also, if this is the case, I still say shame on them. If they do own the sole rights to those games, I'll take down the post.

EDIT2: So basically what Good old games does is fix up old games to run on new computers and then sell the download of their package of modernized game + whatever else? Even if someone released an improved version for free after it was floating around on the internet for years and years?

I'm not entirely sure of the hows and whys of it, but seeing as Gog.com are very much public knowledge, I assume someone would have cried foul if they were, in fact, fouling.

Yeah, that's what I assume as well. I think the main thing is that the mod creator is not making money, there aren't even ads on his site. GoG.com seems like a pretty cool place though, I can't really blame them for trying I suppose. It's not like the mod is common knowledge.

EDIT2: Oh, you were referring to GoG in the last sentence, weren't you? That still doesn't answer whether or not I should take down this post or not. Basically what I need to know is whether GoG's selling of that product in some way conflicts with his site in a legal fashion. I don't think it does, but then again I'm not a lawyer.

I bought Lom and then LoMSE way back with my childhood allowance way back when and still have the LoMSE cd by the way. It functioned as of several years ago, when I found the site and used that instead as the CD was scratched from years of usage and took many tries to eventually read the cd.

This is a great game. Was considering doing a Let's Play of it some day, as I recently found my disk. Chaos Wizards all the way, man... throw the bones down, and let fate decide what the heck your spells do.

What all does the mod do for the balance of the game? I'd be curious to see it.

It helps balance out a great deal. I try not to use the pause often, since that makes it somewhat easy.

Also, it seems he released a beta version fairly recently.

One example of the balance is that Chaos raiders have a really short range ranged attack now, and Chaos units are super cheap to build comparatively

Personally, I think it improved LoMSE a great deal. Air and water are pretty good now.

Solifuge, I loved Chaos mages. Did you ever play around with re-incarnate? It was a spell that you cast on a dead unit, but it was random what the unit turned into once raised. It was the only way to hear the voice acting for the marauder units if you were lucky enough for the unit not to turn into a chicken or something.

The most epic battle I had in LoM was playing as an Earth Terramage lord, and hadn't really expanded much. Balkoth appeared on the edge of the screen with his army of doom after killing a different faith. I spent all my resources on a mercenary army to hopefully weaken him enough to make him retreat. What does Death do on the next turn? Moves the second army in from just out of the range I could see and annihilates the mercenaries before Balkoth moves a third army into the capital. That army was a lot of death units led by a fire warrior and mage who were around level 8. I had a stone giant throwing rocks from the walls, and a couple squads of ax tossers. Basically, the ranged units annihilated each other and I was left with a shambler, 1 low level infantry unit of dwarves and a unit of earthen dark horsemen with my mage lord who was spent. I sent the horsemen out of the doors and they managed to kill the surviving javelineers and the fire mage, before damaging and being killed by the fire warrior and his halberdiers. The infantry and the mage then killed the fire warrior due to his slow hit recovery while the shambler distracted the halberdiers. The halberdiers killed the infantry, and the mage realized it was time to go and made it to the exit. Balkoth was out of movement points, so the mage managed to escape for the time being. I don't think I ever finished that game, though.

http://www.gog.com/en/about

I do not know the specifics of LoM, but GOG does acquire the (publishing) rights to the games.

OK. That clears that up. However, I'm still unsure what that means as far as this particular instance.

I think I may have read some outcry related to Master of Magic and Good Old Games before, but I'm not sure if it's a similar issue or not.

I think for now I'll pull the OP and see what Toady thinks in a PM. I'll bump it again if it's not going to risk causing a problem.

Yeah, if somebody is selling it in a legit fashion as far as we can tell, then sending out a link to a free version is probably a bad idea.
