Inventory Management...
« on: April 01, 2011, 07:28:17 pm »

So right now... I've got LOTS OF MONEY
I don't even know how I managed to get this good. I killed a bandit camp, sure, but damn!
They were LOADED!

So now I've got:
Copper Coin (1)
Gold Coins (73)
Copper Coin (1)
Gold Coins (79)
Copper Coins (2)
Silver Coin (1)
Gold Coins (23)
Silver Coin (1)
Gold Coins (110) (!!! O_O)
Copper Coin (1)
Copper Coins (3)
Silver Coin (1)
Gold Coin (1)
Copper Coins (6)
Gold Coin (1)

So uh... I know the game is unfinished. It's in, pretty much, permanent alpha, and I appreciate that we cannot expect the devs to fix such an unimportant and niggling problem on their own--but are there any... Utilities? Third party ones, that can consolidate inventory stacks, for instance?

What I do is buy iron armor and weapons and then ditch all the remaining cash, it's worthless for anything else. I guess it has trophy value if you're into that but I don't care personally.

I use coins as calling cards.

Like, you know, murderers do.

...

But other than that they're ridiculously pointless, extremely impractical, and generally just silly.

Although, for some reason I've never tried to throw them as a weapon.

Surely !!SCIENCE!! has been done on the matter.

Throwing coins is like shoving them into a space/time field and making move at the speed of light, making it able to shred people's organs. And you throw them one coin at at time.

So throwing coins is kind of like throwing sand back in 40d? I have fond memories of crushing foes' lungs and causing massive internal injuries with a handful of sand.

Inventory management in this game is a nightmare! I picked up more stuff than I realized, and just getting rid of it is painful. What I wouldn't give for a drop all, drag and drop equipping, or just one screen to wear/drop etc.. Despite how well my current game is going I am tempted to restart to just be done with all this garbage since from what I read money is more or less pointless to have.

I have like 40 different types of coins all taking their own spot, and apparently I'm holding like 12 items in my hands.

I would basically find a lair near a town or some other convenient spot, kill whatever's in there if you haven't already, and just start dropping all of your excess money and other junk in there. Lairs have a special "lair flag" set on their tiles so that items in the lair won't get randomly scattered around the map the way they would if you dropped them elsewhere, and another benefit is that lairs are a safe place to sleep. I haven't seen anything get stolen from a lair either.

This is basically what I've started doing. Moneychanging is possible, though difficult, and there's no reason to have to walk around with lots of junk you're not going to use any time soon when you can just stash it somewhere.

You can sell currency to stores.  I don't know what the ratio is, but it's a quick and easy way to convert.

Still, eventually you can end up with so much stuff that you wouldn't want to carry it all around everywhere even in gold coin form. I've read that you can buy spider silk stuff which apparently has a good value to weight ratio, but that's a lot of trouble....

Seems like everything you can buy becomes useless crap at some point anyway, unless maybe in the rare case where you find something made of steel. Actually I've only ever found dwarf stuff made of steel, and none at shops.

Oh dear Christ.

I hope you feel sorry for the pain and suffering you just brought to a hapless villiage in the future.

Because I don't.

I've noticed a general lack of need for wealth. Traditionally adventurers would blow it all on ale and whores. I end up blowing it on dozens of shields.

I knew I forgot to post something about this in the new city thread.
