How much fish do you people eat, and where do you get it?
« on: April 01, 2011, 12:00:13 am »

I want to add some fish to my diet, but I don't really want to prepare it myself.
It would be nice if there were some place I could go get it from.

I've been generally more concerned about my well-being lately
and I realized that there are basically no omega-3 fatty acids in my diet,
which is really frowned upon by every text I've seen on the subject.

So where do you people get your fishes from?

I eat fish what once, twice a week. Sometimes three times. I buy it from the local super market and cook it myself, it isn't that hard. Flake is the best!

Zero.  I get my fish oil from pills, because I've spent so many years being a vegetarian (outside of that, obviously), that I don't know how happy my body would be about being put back on flesh.

EDIT: I wouldn't take the DHA, even, but without it I have enormous mental health problems--so at least for now, I'm stuck with the pills.

I rarely eat fish in the winter, but during fishing season I go camping with my dad every other week or so, and we catch and eat fish at nearby lakes. Not so sure about this year, though, now that he can't leave a 50-mile radius of one particular hospital without being bumped down to the bottom of the (heart) transplant list.

Do you consider lobster and other shellfish "fish"?

Because its really easy to get clams. You just walk along the shallow water till you see some bubbles, dig for the clam, pry it open and eat it.

:P

But seriously, mostly you just pick some up at the store and cook, go to a seafood restaurant and order some, or (occasionally) you can find some fish meals in the frozen food section (these are usually terrible, would recommend against)

I no longer eat fish, having been a vegetarian for quite a while, but plenty of people I know love the stuff, and they usually eat it maybe once a week?

As for where I get my Omega-3s...
Mostly from nuts, mustard, cabbage, cauliflower, soy, and brussel sprouts. All of which are at least if not better sources than fish. A quarter of a cup of walnuts for example practically caps you out for the day, and you need almost 20oz of, say, Snapper, to accomplish the same goal.

Which is another point, if you're looking for Omegas, the TYPE of fish you eat matters as well. (Salmon is much better - you need only 5oz to match a quarter cup of walnuts)

I eat trout every Friday, I buy it in the supermarket. There's also 2-3 cans of sardines or tuna a week, and that's about it.

Preparing fish is really easy, especially if you buy them cleaned. Just rub them with a bit of salt and throw into a pan, turn a couple of times and it's done. If you're not sure how long to fry it's better to err on the side of undercooked, raw fish ain't bad (people eat sushi, after all), but dry fish is horrible. Which reminds me, IMO freshwater fish is much better than saltwater because it tends to be juicier.

Not nearly enough. I used to fish every summer when I was younger, and eat plenty of bass and brim from the river and crab and other fish from from sound. Now I am lucky if I go to the store and buy some frozen fillets to fry/bake.

At most I only eat fish once or twice a year, and even then it's only fish fingers.

Fish for dinner is not often, but fish for lunch is a common occurence (tune and mayo sandwiches are awesome).

I don't eat a lot of fish because my roommate doesn't like it and I'm not 100% sure how to cook it.

I do eat sushi once in a while for lunch though.

Getting fish for me would be really easy as I live in a coastal city and I'm near a big market.

Eat fish as often as possible when at home. It might have helped that my parents also grew up eating fish all the time. It helps to know the people behind the meat counter at the supermarket personally, because they tell you when the fish isn't fresh and save you good cuts/fishes. The problem with fish is learning to debone it before or during meal-times; I either dig through the fillet for bones or pull them out of my mouth as I eat.

As for preparing the fish, either slow fry or bake is how I go. Since I like to leave in the fish oils, I don't cook them a lot or do more than add a bit of salt and soy sauce.

I'm vegetarian like Vector but I'm sorta lenient on fish as I wouldn't be able to survive without wonderful dishes like Shrimp & Grits.

Vector i really think you should allow fish in your diet. I just don't see it as a good idea for people to rely on pills to stay healthy.
