Spoiler: Backstory - Part 1 (click to show/hide)

After rifts in technology, a hydrogen bomb was formed that released no radiation. At this time in world history, alliances of nations bitterly fought for world resources, including oil, uranium, and lithium. The disputes heated all the way up to the fusion point of hydrogen, and so a near-Armageddon began.
It was then that the Northern Coalition decided to send its colonists. Using modern technology, they escaped orbital velocity, stopped their gravity drives, and glided for several hours. Missiles were launched at them, but before reaching their target the colonists warped to star system [name here]. Their goal was the (fifth) hydrogen oxide planet of the system.

Having a very low axial tilt of 3^o, the poles are frigid and the equator is boiling. Winds cycle from the equator to the poles, bringing moisture through the habitable temperate regions of the world and depositing them in the other extremes. It's gravity is approximately 1.3 G's. It bulges at the equator, with almost no ocean there due to heat and elevation. There are rifts in the middle ring containing many technically valuable metals, including radioactive isotopes, which were unfortunately not identified by our scanners. Most of the temperate region is a large, nearly flat landscape covered with carbon-based and nitrogen-based vegetation. No mention of animal life-forms.

Coming out of warp, the group landed within the gravitational pool of the star system. The pilot turned on the gravity drives and headed to the course of the planet. The destination was the northern temperate region, they would later look at the southern region. Entering the unusually high gravity of the planet, the computer miscalculated the course (instruments failed in measuring ~0.06 G's) and the brakes weren't powered enough for a smooth landing... the craft skidded into a forest and landed safely, with no casualties and only two twisted ankles. Sadly, the gravity drives failed from the overload, and so they were stuck in the northern forest. They started dismantling the ship and building a home, with the air containing 74% oxygen they eventually learned to overcome the gravity. They were ready for anything... or so they thought.

In the southern hemisphere, a group of unknown lifeforms had settled several (Terran) decades before, but with no technology. Having a special psionic gland, they could control matter given a decent supply of altogen (which was in some of the local plants). They came here on a ship "magically" made of unrefined iron, as usual. Their goal was the compressed fossil altogen in the mountains, which was presumed to have desirable quantities.

On a mining trip in the mountains, one of the colonists saw a strange lifeform. He hid a distance back and looked at it through infrared and optical scanners. He completely did not believe his eyes, when the creature broke some rock apart and sent it flying in a stream with only slight movement of it's appendages.
"Chief? We have some competition it seems, and if there is a thing as magic these monsters are masters of it."

Character selection/stats/etc. are not done yet. Ideas on any of these?

Honestly? Not sure where you're going with it. Is it just tech humans vs magic monsters? Are the players supposed to be one side or the other? What would they be doing? The magic monsters want magic coal, the humans want... uh... everything I guess? But it doesn't sound like they'd care much about the altogen, so... I'm not sure why they'd be fighting exactly, and I'm not sure what the players could be doing other than fighting.

1: I really don't think humanity would spark up so quickly even if nukes became radiationless. But it's not a big deal.
2: You could merge all the spoilers, really.
3: I nominate Tau Ceti to be your system. Sun-like, no potential hazardous amounts of ultraviolet radiation, no gas giants causing problems, no real-life planets identified, close to Sol... perfect target for a game, really.
4: What is the humans' stance on the aliens and why do the feel them as competition so quickly? On first contact people would likely be fascinated by them, not viewing them as competition.

Mostly yes, it's tech vs magic, though both races will be able to accumulate both to some degree.

But it doesn't sound like they'd care much about the altogen, so... I'm not sure why they'd be fighting exactly, and I'm not sure what the players could be doing other than fighting.
Trying to figure out what exactly the hell is going on, trying to either cooperate or fight (depending on player choices)

Survive, mine things, and try to achieve your personal goal (i.e. scientist wants to study them, miner wants to get the resources, commander wants to try to communicate, etc.)

It's just that guy not exactly figuring out what is going on. The alien was also "mining", so that could be part of the explanation. It was technically another phrase for "someone else is here", just a bit more humorous.
