Where's the iron?
« on: March 27, 2011, 06:13:21 pm »

Toady seems to have tweaked things so that, while gems are in abundance, iron (or ores at all other than copper ores) is crazy impossible to find. This is making the game absurdly difficult.

I have a location with tons of iron and flux stone, if you want a save you can have it but I am a few years in.

There is always goblinite ore, in almost every fort.

I've had a hard time getting iron out of goblinite, too. Seems to be mostly copper and bronze since .19

Yeah, if there's barely any iron in the world, the goblins aren't really going to be able to get to it very well either.  :(

Bronze is just as good if not better, and everyone has access to that. You could also scrounge for steel from the dwarven caravan, as they always have that too.

Can't support that.... since we have the mineral occurrence setting.... search for a side you like... and then just change that setting - maybe you consider it cheating, but as the bug fixes and feature changes are so fast updated I have nothing against some DFHack"ing" science or prospectoring....

Just my last embark for .23:

HEMATITE   12320
MAGNETITE   28913

For the same side and another mineral occurrence setting it was:

HEMATITE   52964
MAGNETITE   13858

For the later one it was 1598 (.21) as a parameter, for the first (.23) one it was 1171... Sure my old one is much higher in Fe Minerals - but with the change in creatures and civs that made a neutral biome into an evil one for that singular parameter changed.... and well, 40k is enough to get me through to the next update and world gen changes ;)
[edit: for my few checks with DFhack, from .21 and to .23 the minerals/stones never changed - it was just the living beings (and therefore good/evil biome settings) that where altered]

I am not sure how it is for the just provided world gen profiles... but just changing a singular parameter that is not affecting morphology/landscape you may get total different results for the ores/gems/etc. - just play with it....

Iron's in blood. Mod in a brewing reaction that leaves iron ore as a waste product.

The wiki might have info about hematite...I can't find the link though.

Your best bet is to embark in location that has 2-3 biomes with different stone layouts. You could also tweak the mineral settings. I use 2000. Though the latter might just give you more galena.

Iron is still found in sedimentary layers. My current embark has huge amounts of magnetite and bituminous coal. Set the site finder for multiple shallow metals and flux, and look for a site not right next to the mountains.

I always mod my worlds to have no caverns, and noted recently that there's a setting for mineral occurrence.

In the first fort I created after noticing this, I set metal abundance to it's highest level, and literally 1/4 of the stone I excavated was iron.

Sadly enough, having only one cavern will cause your "shallow metal" to be in the magma sea, so I've found.

If you reduce cavern levels, you'll want to increase "Levels above Layer 1" and/or "Levels above Layer 2" to compensate.
