Uhhh... When you ask someone if they are homophobic because of their religion, and they say yes.... Well, what exactly would happen if they didn't have that religion..?
Its just... I feel that you need some existing feeling against gays, to be that way..
Lets keep it mild.

I have never thought about that too much because those people who are sure enough of themselves that they know their homophobia is validated by their religion are probably incredibly unlikely to be swayed from such. It is an interesting thought, though.

Be sure to include the disclaimer "By religion I mean the specific denominations and congregation communities that support such ideals and not the overall different faiths of different people with different ideals." It's amazing how many times that becomes a problem.

I think it's just a mix of following what's comfortable and not adjusting to strange different things they can't quite grasp. It's a scary thing, people get strange around scary new things.

I do wonder about something though. Say somebody has a religion that holds values that contradict homosexuality, like heavy emphasis on families and Husband and Wife and all that stuff. Their doctrine of dealing with evils of the world is to love them as their own family to slowly improve it through association and example.
Would such a person be homophobic? They are technically anti-gay, but what they would do is exactly the same as if they are pro-gay.

I would assume that goes without saying but maybe not on the internet!

I don't think that would make them homophobic as they would only be homophobic if they genuinely held prejudice against the gays. Maybe they feel their religion just dictates that to its followers, or just to them, and so they try to be that way and "improve themself" based on their religion's ideals, but not necessarily project those ideals or that way of living on others.

Are they going to be fighting for gay rights?  Will they ever say anything negative about gay people as a group around their own dinner table, possibly to educate their children?  If they have a gay child, will they treat him or her differently from their other children by virtue of their sexuality?

There is no connection between the action of "love your neighbor" and the desired result of "change gayness."  In my framework, there would have to be something else in there--and in my experience, there is.  That being informing the sinners that they have sinned, but God loves them anyway, just so that they know about it.  How can you love your neighbor if you do not act to save him from perdition?

Gotta warn you that I'm pretty sick, so this may be a bit jumbled, but I'm not seeing it, Duke.  Well, I'm specifically not seeing it under the Catholic model, but that's a pretty solid one.

You don't seem to get this.  They're prejudiced against gay people, just acting on it with extra love in the gay person's direction.  Theoretically.

No, Duke didn't say they were prejudiced against homosexuality, just that their religion's ideals contradicted it. Only if they genuinely felt that way (as they would probably be inclined to if they fully followed and believed in their religion's ideals as pertaining to homosexuality) would they be homophobic. If they did, I believe that yes, they would be homophobic. Otherwise, no.

e: To be clear, the church I go to (whose "religion" I guess you could say I follow) encourages me to be accepting of people of all religions and beliefs (and people without religion too!). I could follow the Unitarian Way(tm) like that, but I could also be a part of it while personally holding prejudice against, say, Buddhists. It comes down more to the person than what their books say.

*cough*

Duke informs us that all practitioners of the religion are anti-gay.  As in, indeed, prejudiced.
