Cracked said he was a dick so he's a dick.

There we go.

Because stopping progress of science and technology is not dickish at all

Cause what? He advanced said cause, not stopped it.

Cracked said he was a dick so he's a dick.
Heh. How trustworthy as a source are those guys anyways?

Like... Zero? They will stretch the truth or lie to make a good story. That is what they do, they are payed to entertain, not to teach.

Edit: I would like to say, Demand is okay, maybe better then some in the truth department, so you could trust cracked more then some websites. But in the end the motivator is getting the right story out.

Well for one he tried to stop the implementation of AC electricity because he was rolling nicely with DC even though it was proven to be inferior when it came to long distance transfer of power, he went so far to stop it that he killed an elephant (i think, or was it a dog?) with AC to prove that it's too dangerous to use which in turn lead to the electric chair.

Bryson said he was kind of a dick, and I trust Bryson. But accoding to Bryson like 50% (80% of the ones people know the names of) of the best scientists in history have been dicks, so thats not saying a whole lot. Scientists have ego and ambition, surprise surprise.

Anyway, earth hour is dumb. Thats what we have rolling blackouts for.

To be fair, the elephant had it coming. She had killed several people already.

At any rate, yeah, he fought the AC for money, yeah he got it implemented in the electric chair as a take that, and yeah, if he was not so arrogant he would have owned AC anyway.

But that still ignores that fact that without Edison propping him up at first (non withstanding the dropping he would do later) there is a chance Tesla would not have invented it anyway.

Or anything.

The basis here is that you can not take some infighting in scientists to discredit a life time of achievements.

Turning off my electronics will not turn off the powerplants that supply them. The only way that you're ever directly burning fuel these days is by cooking, driving, and if you have a gas-heater/water-heater, turning on the heat. Power plants are built to supply a large amount of power at all times and problems only occur when demand exceeds capacity. When demand is especially low, it burns along without noticing.

You'd probably get pretty hostile too if some funny-talking guy with a moustache walked in the back door with a way better version of the thing you were going to revolutionize the world with.

The point of Earth Hour is more to say "See!  Isn't it kind of nice to not be in a brightly lit, TV-infested hyperactive lifestyle for a little while?  Maybe you could go outside!  Heavens!"

It's not so much that that one hour makes a difference, it's that it's supposed to make you spend at least a little time seeing that turning off the lights won't kill you.

Unless you're on life support.

For the record, the only electronic I keep on most of the time is my computer, and my room light at night. Everything else in my home stays dark unless a family member uses it.

I love Earth Hour.  With all of the lights out all over time, it makes burglary a lot easier.

Seeing as I work in a kitchen and we were and are fully booked both yesterday and tonight, I can safely say that at least one restaurant is going to ignore Earth Hour so hard.

That said, I do do it when I'm at home because I like candles. That said, I do it all the time anyway because, you know, candles.
