Earth hour
« on: March 25, 2011, 11:35:51 am »

Hey, Earth Hour starts tomorrow. And I can't help but feel like this is all just a stupid, backwards move.

Turn off the lights? Ok. And maybe if this was still 1999, when people actually used light bulbs and the lights used up electricity.

But lighting candles? I'm horrified that people think that turning off fluorescent lights in exchange for candles is actually going to save the world. Candles may have negligible CO2 emissions, but so do most of our lights ::)

This Earth Hour thing started off as a noble concept, but seems to have formed into some ignorant hippy movement to hate technology.

Earth hour is just so people feel better about the fact that every other bit of their lifestyle is horrible for the environment.

If you want to stop using technology just become Amish or something.

(Though most of the Amish around here cheat by asking non-Amish for help, like rides in cars and what not)

Every time Earth Hour comes up I feel a great temptation to buy an excessive amount of high-powered floodlights and strap them to the roof of my home, just to spite the hippies. The whole thing is just stupid. There are also apparently counter-events called Edison Hour and Human Achievement Hour, because they percive Earth Hour being anti-technology and anti-human, respectively. I think that's sort of overdoing it, but they do have a point. We have better things to do than waste our time on powering down all of our electronics.

?

What's the rationale?  "I'm not doing it because someone else is doing it for me"?  What's the point of self-imposed restrictions if you worm your way around them?

Maybe I should try being all pious or building character or whatever, too.  "I'm not doing it because the <insert device/modern convenience here> is doing it for me."

Not nearly as cynical as I was expecting. I am disappointed.

And because Edison was kind is a dick afaik.

Apparently you knew a guy that died about seventy years before you were born?

Because, ya know, you can't know something unless you've been there, right?
