Hehe, someone should re-rail?
more like de-rail, since this is the discussion this thread was created for :|

Nope, I think this discussion is better than the original. I really did miss the religious discussions on here.
eh, i didn't thought i could agree with you so much
i put a lot of effort into my response to your post last time(the example of religions being wrong), i'd love to hear your thoughts on my reasoning(hey, look, you ninja!)

I don't think that modern religion and science have much bearing on each other at all.  Historically sure, but these days nope.  Modern religion has to deal with the fallout from new scientific advancements, because they bring up new moral questions that had never come up before, and they don't always deal with it very well very fast, but religion itself is not about science.

Modern religion (as a SOCIAL edifice, not a spiritual one) is a very big philosophy thing and even some psychology involved.

Subscribing to a religion means you don't have to think as hard about your own personal philosophy.  Now, some people think that's kind of dishonest, but I think it's a reasonable thing to do.  1) Hey, face it, not everyone is good at philosophy and ethics.  You might as well benefit from other peoples' experience.  Reading and research will help, but not everyone has the time, inclination, or intellectual stamina to wade through the twenty biggest authors on the subject, and that doesn't make them somehow less of a person.  2) If your whole community follows the same philosophy, then you're all on the same page.  You agree about what's right or wrong, and when you pool your efforts, you work towards common tasks more easily.

Religions are philosophy.
yes, and also gastronomy
That's why they call them dieties.

Religion and science are looking at the same thing in different ways.
Yeah. I think that. And you think that.

But how many others are going to think that with out you backing it up at least a little bit.
I, for one, don't. The only thing that I can see that to be true about is mythology, which generally isn't relied upon too much anymore.

Want to go the 20 questions rout or just have me tell you the thought process?

Edit: Also, Sowelu, if you don't mind answering, what are you?

My life is already too much of an elaborate game. Let's just go with the thought process.

edit - Also, Sowelu is an adorable pony, obviously.

I guess I hadn't really thought of it that way. Still, I think tearing down philosophies based upon disprovable theories and replacing them with observational facts would definitely benefit society (at least in the long run).

I'm gonna level with you, I couldn't make head or tail of your point. But what I could get from it was that if a religion says it's god is correct than it can't be(?)

Whoop you fell into the trap and answered the first question!

Now it is bigger then a bread box...

Yeah. Science seeks to know things to make life better. Religion seeks to make life better. End goal of both? Make life better.

Yeah. It would. But we don't have that knowledge right now. Or at least all knowledge we do have fits well enough with the philosophies to let them go on.

what i meant is that religions disagree with each other, and if some are correct, those who disagree must not be, therefore at least some religions must be wrong...

That is so extraordinarily general that I would have never come to that conclusion.

You could say that about almost anything.

edit - Fuck, that sounds kinda snarky huh? Unintentional.

Well, that's the general belief in religion. And I have to agree with you.

Yeah. Well. I am awesome.

You are welcome.

And yeah you can. Learn to live with the fact that things have genuine contributions to society. I am pretty sure fqllve already does. Not so sure about the others.

Rest assured, I know that you at least seem to know the score.

We do have knowledge of certain things that people still oppose because of their disprovable theories. Abortion, for example. Since we cannot prove that a soul is destroyed when a fetus is killed, (or even that a soul exists) there is literally no moral difference between a sperm cell that dies, and a fetus that is aborted. I forget what trimester it is, but the fetus does not feel pain up until that point. Over 99% of abortions are performed before that point.

Negative, I am a meat popsicle.

Actually, I'm a shamanic practitioner who sometimes hangs out with the cool kids at the local monthly pagan ritual.  They've got some awesome statuary and an absolutely enviable stone circle (biiiiig).  Plus, clothing-optional heated indoor pool, complete with attractive pagan folk, and on occasion even a band.  Either that, or the smaller pagan group who uses the UU church a mile up the road.  Mostly I just do shit with my drum, journeying healing etc, chill in the high desert, and try to talk to coyotes or at least collect their dead parts.  My GF's getting initiated with a local group soon too, which is cool.

Right. And we also know that being nice to people is good.

Edit: That is not to say I agree with your fetus thing, but since I am pro choice I will let it slide.

Also. I disbelieve Sowelu. That was a real question from me. You may be telling the truth... But honestly I doubt it.
