Smelter Reactions
« on: March 21, 2011, 10:13:04 am »

Has anyone found a way to produce bone or shell via smelter reactions?  I haven't checked in on this for around a year, so I'm not too sure if the impossible status has changed or not.

Well, we're not limited to the smelter as a reaction location any more (as of just under a year ago, IIRC) and we can produce bone items, but based on the answer that I got from a similar question that I asked a few days ago, the argument that SHOULD produce actual bones causes a glitch that usually crashes the game.

Hrmm, what about a reaction that produces, say, a dead turtle?  They produce both bones and shell, don't they?   If a piece of a corpse cannot be produced, it strikes me that a whole corpse could be; it'd be somewhat nicer than producing a live animal to keep track of (e.g. corpse will automagically be butchered if the butcher shop is set to auto whereas a live animal requires paying attention).

So, browsing the forums suggests that making a corpse via a reaction won't work.  Anyone know how a corpse produces parts?  Perhaps that more salient question is the means by which a butcher shop produces the corpse parts?  Either one of those seems like it could yield a usable reaction string.

That whole area is kinda buggy still...

I would recommend sticking to non organic reactions.    If you do venture into that area know that CORPSE and CORPSEPART tags are broken currently.  Also bone stacks do not get used right...  And soaps do not get created in .21 *missing entity tag bug*

If you just want bone and shell pieces though you can add them to a creature and they will produce them on butchering.

The butchering process is hard-coded into the game.  It is not present in the raws.

So the simplest method would be to add bone and/or shell to dogs/cats/cows/llamas/antidisestablishmentarians and then flag them for butchering?  Doesn't sound too bad, though it's not exactly ideal.

Then again...cats with shells...

Technically you do not have to add a physical shell, you can actually add properties to make a part work like a shell... For example: add the [SHELL]  tag to a hoof and  you can use horse hoves as shells and the like.

Profit's idea works just fine. Also why not to mod in pet turtoises? They are cute :).

I just realized that hypothtically you could make bone BARs at a smelter if you defined a stone in the INORGANIC raws based on the BONE_TEMPLATE, and then defined another, mineable stone, that was an ore of it (but then again, bone bars could be done with a regular custom reaction).

And soaps do not get created in .21 *missing entity tag bug*

I thought it was established on the bug tracker that this was because your raws were incorrect - in a fresh 0.31.21 download, soap making works just fine.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I have to admit I did not look at the bug tracker. If this is indeed the case, it means my raws somehow got polluted with one of my mod raws. *The reason I use winmerge is to prevent this*

That is downright embarrassing if it is the case *Unzips raws to check immediately*

And indeed it is....

Dammit, that means the raws in my mods are messed up as well... *Goes to fix them.*

Also bone stacks do not get used right...
Question mark?
Bone stacks are used in EXACTLY the same way that they always have been.

If that's not right...

So, I lost track of the resource describing how to add shells to things.  Would any of you mind showing me how to add a shell to cats/kittens?  I am most amused by this idea.
