After seeing all these replies about people liking the smell of new books, I figured I'd try to find out what chemical it is.

I didn't find the answer, but I did find this which I thought was funny:  http://smellofbooks.com/aromas/new-book-smell/

Geologist so smelling rocks, fresh water in the mines is a godsend.

We have a special smell?

Mathematicians?

Oh, yes.  There are some that linger after they've left the room.  Especially bad on rainy days.
I have to say this now but i abandon math after statistics and algebra 2, probably go back after some years.

I like the smell of cold, wet air (the kind you get right after a hard British rainstorm).

Huh, I guess I don't smell it because the smell of fail around here is to overwhelming.

Ooh, other smells I like:

Woodsmoke (Well, depends on the wood, some smell/taste nicer than others when burned)
Charcoalsmoke
Freshly picked tree leaves.

Ones I hate:

The smell of rotting bin juice (you know that sticky sludge at the bottom of schoolyard bins? That.)
Spearmint (makes me SICK)
Deoderant
Perfumes

I like the smell of wood smoke, the smell of a crisp winter afternoon, and automobile shops (mechanics, garages and the like).
Also, the smell of rubber. The kind they use in gas masks. DELICIOUS.

I hate the smell of flowers. Can't stand 'em, really.
Also, USB flash drive ports. Smells horrible.

I like household paint smells.
The iconic new car smell is great!
Best buy smells wonderful.
I live upstairs in the farthest corner of the house, so smells in the kitchen are very different than what they really are. one day I smell bacon, we're making biscuits and gravy, the next morning I might smell biscuits, but it's really bacon. It's very fun to try and guess!

I pretty much have a breathing problem. I hate those perfume smells too, especially in a car, makes me want to vomit.
