corrupted save file in adventure mode

a.k.a The Amazing Theory of Negative Inflation

Game crashed during the saving process in adventure mode. Now when loading the save it reports "inflate error: -3" and then closes.
This occured while saving on the world view on top of an old fortress of mine. I believe the game would also crash when attempting to reclaim said fortress in the past.

All in all not a big issue on it's own since losing if fun, it's all more history, but the problem at hand is that since there's still a save there that it can't load I can't resume play as a new adventurer or fortress.

Inflate error -3 is a pretty big killer over here... your save has had it. I'm afraid that all you can do is delete it and move on.

I don't know if this is what has caused the inflate error... but something that can definitely be pinned down to causing inflation errors is ctrl-alt-deleting out of Dwarf Fortress without saving to get around some mistake you might have made. The game updates the save while you're playing, the big save at the end is only half of that story. Once you start quitting and not doing the final save, things stop matching up and your save becomes shot.

If thats what you've been doing, back up your saves each time before you play instead (just copy the save folder each time before you load, and keep it somewhere else). That way, if something goes wrong, you can quit and load up the original save.

Thanks that's very informative, I have done that in the past, though not recently when this situation popped up and I'll definetly keep all that in mind as I play.
To delete the save is there a specific file I can erase or is it the case of new world generation?

Trying to ctrl-alt-delete WHILE saving is also a very bad idea.

That's a given. In this case it physically crashed while saving which replicates that situation.

Well... each region has its own files, you get a regionx folder and a regionx.sav file (where x is a number). One is for your entire world, one is for your fortress. You need to delete them both and generate a new world.

Thanks TotalPigeon, I don't like important dwarves dieing/ making mistakes so I end up ctrl-alt-deleting DF a fair bit. It's useful to know that that is one cause of inflate error -3.
