FC1 brought in dynamics sounds into a whole new level also with intelligent ai that will try to kill you any possible way by calling allies and try to outflank you requiring you to stealth alot instead of CoD bumrush. Other than that you had a sandbox world that you can take whatever direction you want to get to the objective with little/no loadtimes. It was a massive feat at the beginnings of CryEngine.

Yeah, the console ports were frankly crap, and took a lot of the stuff that made it great, instead making it a linear shooter with weird mutation crap. FC2 on the other hand is one of the better games out there. I've logged 100+ hours into that thing, and somehow keep coming back to it just to mess around. There are some annoying aspects to it, but the setting and premise of the game is novel, the Jackel is an extremely well written character (especially his tapes) and the ending is a pièce de résistance. Also, I hate collectibles, but I actually found finding the diamonds a fun side thing to do. Plus just going out and setting up your ambushes on those bases was ridiculously fun.

TL;DR, buy it. It's getting dated now in terms of design, but still a lot of fun.

I must disagree. I found FC2 to be painfully lacking in terms of having the world be alive. To me, it feels like someone just plopped spawnpoints on a big pseudo-open (there's a lot of corridors - like having the road be limited by cliffs or jungle on both sides, plus the rivers) world.

There are no non-hostile NPCs in the world outside of missions or calling in someone to cover your ass, and even if you're working for one of the two factions this does absolutely fuckall in terms of gameplay, since both sides will still shoot you. Making accomplishing missions feel completely pointless.

Maybe it gets better later, but I couldn't tell because I'm getting bored out of my mind after doing one mission at a time and then I have to take a break, since, at least early missions, amount to 'go to place X and shoot people' with no variety whatsoever, and coupled with the absurd refill time of checkpoints, shooting becomes a chore.

I forced myself to finish FC2 because I feel compelled to finish every game I start.

It never gets any better. It's always the same boring, empty world populated only by instantly respawning checkpoints. The missions never get interesting, the story remains nonsensical, etc.

It's a shame because the engine was amazing for it's time (and has even held up reasonably well to this day imo) but it really was a chore to play.

Anyone ever played Babel Rising? Like $7 right now, looks like kind of a fun, focused God game where you try to kill humans trying to build the Tower of Babel. Doesn't seem that deep but looks sort of fun as a casual game.

Dunno what your opinion of TotalBiscuit is, but he did a video on it. Looked pretty dull to me.

The horrible scammy thing? You call that "rocky"?
Sure, up till today I knew nothing about the guys behind those games. So I might not be the one to talk. However, I read the article on their website explaining how things went for them and where they stand now. The impression I've got is they fucked up in the beginning, but were fully aware of that and did many things to mend the damage over last 3 years. And continue to do so.
As said, I do not know about any forum dramas/flame wars that went down during those years. Maybe I'm just to big of a sucker for stories about indie devs/less known studios hitting rock bottom but refusing to give up. Because I know I am. So maybe I am wrong to like them.

But hey, 3€ for a 4-pack is something I do not regret spending. If in the end it turns out my money was in fact not well spent then I that's the lesson I just have to learn for the next time.

I had it for my iPhone. It's kinda fun, but it's more like a coffee break kind of game, and may get boring fast.

I have gotten Aarklash: Legacy, and although I haven't played much so far, here some preliminary impressions: It's a niceish real time with pause CRPG. Don't go expecting all that much, no character building from scratch either. Few tactical options, not a really deep combat system. Heard good things about the story. Don't go in expecting anything revolutionary, but it's nice enough.

So, Plague Inc Evolved. Currently on Early Access for $14.99.

Looks a bit like an expanded, shinier version of that one flash game where Madagascar shuts down instantly. Worth it?

No. Might as well play the one where Madagascar shuts down at a smallest sign of a cough.

Way overpriced. I have Plague Inc on my phone, where it's both cheaper, more worth it, and better suited to the platform, and otherwise is apparently the same thing.

To be fair, it does seem to be much bigger than the flash game; more infection vectors (the original had 3) plus content creation tools and multiplayer.

I'll wait for it to go on sale though.

Final Fantasy XIV is half off, and a friend of mine has been bugging me to get it for a while now.

Is it worth it?

I'm going to sell out to charity, and recommend that everyone go buy the Humble Bundle, for those glorious Steam keys.

It's about $13 a month. What's half off, again?
