Is it just me, or do ghosts massivly lag the game?
« on: March 11, 2011, 03:24:33 am »

Every time I have ghosts on my map, the game LAAAGS in chunks. One minute it is going all normal, then a ghost goes into a wall, out of sight and lags the hell out of my fortress.

Well known.  Slabs or coffins pronto.

I've heard you can mod dwarves for [NO_UNDEAD] but haven't tried this myself.

Someone should confirm it. Ghosts destroyed one of my forts from lag.

I think ghosts sometimes flip out and their erratic pathing (all directions, ignoring solid stuff) causes as much stress as 50 dorfs. I always bury or slab my dorfs asap. I have a secondary internal graveyard for siege burials.

Oh, also, Ghostly Fisherdwarfs fish!

One of the best sentences ever.  Is it true?

ghostly fisherdwarves is true.

Also, I'm currently testing the NO_UNDEAD tag.

EDIT:
bah, I added [NO_UNDEAD] to the [CREATURE:DWARF], and still got undead dwarves.

However, I did find another tag that the Bronze Collosi have, [CANNOT_UNDEAD]. Adding tag and restarting did not prevent more undead form popping up, so I'm currently testing it on a new pocket worldgen.

EDIT 2: [CANNOT_UNDEAD] also does nothing, as dwarven ghosts still came around with this tag.

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

Ghosts will crash a game. From what I could tell from my experience with it, it comes from the ghost in question farking with the unit lists, as it will vanish and reappear both erratically and frequently (and when you can't see it, it effectively doesn't exist... until it reappears), and processing it drags the game down to unplayability.

Coffins are a good start, but slabs put up in an area that a building destroyer can't reach is your best bet. I include a slab with every tomb (designated as a room or not) just for insurance; I also have a penchant for flooding burial chambers with magma, which destroys the corpse, so a magma-safe slab is always there.

Or you could just wall the tombs if you want the least convoluted insurance.

Well if you remove the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag from dwarves I think they have like 2-4 children each time they give birth. And if you get enough mothers up on the pillars you can probably get a good waterfall going.

It crashed mine twice. I had to keep reloading and trying to get the slab done before the ghost turns up. I think it has something to do with the fact that the ghost uses the whole map to path-find (since it can travel through walls).

It should never crash the game, but it may just hugely reduce your FPS.

Make sure you have enough coffins to bury dwarves. If the corpse cannot be retrieved for any magma related reasons, build a memorial slab instead. The body in a coffin or a memorial slab dedicated to that dwarf will both satisfy the ghost.

Question: What happens if you put a body in a coffin / dedicate a slab, then afterwards destroy it? Will ghosts that have been laid to rest reappear?
