Render Fat Unavailable as Job
« on: March 08, 2011, 12:41:54 am »

Like the title says. Just butchered all my extra animals in the fort, and my butcher's shop is overflowing with fat, but the "Render Fat" job is unavailable at the kitchen (listed in red, gives an error message if I try to select it).

What's going on here?

Do you have the cooking labour enabled on a dwarf?

Because DF players are heavily into pain.

Yeah, he's happily toiling away making biscuits out of all the meat.

Also, because the butcher's shop and kitchen are outside, I've enabled refuse hauling outdoors. Still nothing.

You could try setting the job through the manager too, 'j' - 'm' - 'q', in case for some reason the kitchen has got confused as to whether it can issue that job (cf. some of the problems with soap maker's workshops a few versions back...)

just cancel cook's biscuit job .. render fat is an automatic duty ..  and if you slaughter some more bigger animals better put up 2 + shops extra so you dont waste the precious fat :)

Fat doesn't rot, I make it a regular habit to dump fat after butchering so that I don't wind up cooking tallow.

Go through the managers screen as said, but do you have a fat stockpile enabled near your kitchen? I purposely place fat stockpiles outside away from my kitchen if I'm too lazy to dump them so that the order doesn't automatically turn on. This can and will confuse the kitchen though, in which case the above method will work.

I believe you can always have them done through the job manager

From the description of the event, I think that your copy of Dwarf Fortress was on drugs when this happened. That's surely the only logical explanation for a human werewolf with deadly farts dying from it's own excrement after slaughtering some goblins comrades.
