I've had babies punch troglodytes, forcing them to puke, and get away unscathed.
... I got the strange feeling this wasn't the main topic.  :o

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

Do babies actually attempt to attack?

In one of the previous fortresses I had a female nmilitary dwarf carrying her baby around,
when the squad attacked a forgotten beast.

Well, the FB attacked the baby instead of its mother.
Something it shouldn´t have done,
as the baby attacked the FB in return and bruised it badly.
If I remember correctly, the FB got even more wounds from the baby than from its mother :D

Slightly off topic: I agree that we need an OPTION for a more detailed site finder because some people enjoy playing very specific sites.

I also think there should be a 'shuffle' option which gives you a completely random embark which you don't get to see beforehand. Have this represent the mountainhome pointing to a spot on the map saying "Build me a fortress!"

It would be Fun.

Shuffle option can be replaced by dice roll or embarking on first place available after selecting DF mode.

The point was not to see the embark prior to striking the earth. :P I just think it would be fun, and extremely easy to implement.

I'd be happy to just get igneous intrusive, igneous extrusive, sedimentary organic, sedimentary inorganic, metamorphic igenous, metamorphic sedimentary, sandy, loamy, and clay. Clay-y. More work on stone types, their distributions, and geological formation is needed in general. The lack of plate tectonics or volcanism influencing mountain formation is the main reason. I want to find granite plutons half sticking out of sandy deserts with the sandstone beneath broken by quartzite where the magma flowed upward. More realistic geology, if taken to full force, can create really amazing results.

But how to reliably separate the baby from mother without killing the mother? All else flows from this. Do burrows do anything? (I doubt it). flowing water? does caging the mother leave the baby in her arms? knocking her out with sydrome will likely hit the baby as well, and even if not, the baby will just try to suicide constantly if the mother doesn't eventually come and pick it up from Gobboe's Daycare.
A combination of Dwarven Aquapark and One-Way grates. Also it's a washing system
Code: [Select]
<<WWW
~~F^#. <- baby goes here
<<W.WW
WWW.  <- adults here
Plate is set to trigger on all but dwarven babies and linked to the grate next to it.
Water flows from west.
First a baby is washed away through fortifications, and then before mother picks him up he wanders over plate not triggering it and thus having it's way open. For those adults who are washed through it that path is efficiently blocked. Sure ,there should be safe exits from adult way and from pond under grate.

To me it makes sense for dwarves to have as much information about the geology of the world as they could get from quick expeditions through the area or perhaps word-of-mouth information from other civilizations. I can see why they'd know all about the layers closer to the surface, especially if you have high cliffs, because they could just look at the layers of stone sticking out of cliff faces, but I don't really get how they'd have a worldwide survey of deep metals.

So to me it would make it seem more "fair" if they had more detailed information about surface layers and less or no information about deeper layers. They might also have incomplete information or guesses like "deep metals?" that are shown but may or may not actually be there. I mean they don't exactly have sonic imaging. Just my thoughts...

I don't really mind having to do a little bit of exploratory embarking where I just embark with as many miners as possible, mine downwards and abandon the fortress when food supplies run out, then reclaim the area if things look good. That's what they'd realistically have to do anyway, but right not there's not even a hint of whether the area has coal for example, even where they should be able to see shale or something sticking out of a cliff face.

Most people don't want to go through a half dozen embark sites to find one with iron and coal - and let's be honest, everything else besides those, we're willing to have flexibility on.  Copper, gold... eh.

I'll admit I'm enjoying the challenge of playing on a map without iron, but most people just want to know about iron.  It's not a realism thing, it's just - why waste my time reloading the game a bunch of times, when I can just tell the game - I want an embark with iron?

I found an embark with plentiful wood, reasonable outdoor temperatures, and plentiful surface magnetite.  Posting worldgen seed here for people who want iron on their 31.19 experimental maps.

A world gen seed tells us the location is there, somewhere... But where?

Yeah, I failed.  Here it is: north of the deserts on the southwestern island/continent, where the tall mountains run into heavily forested warm zones.  No access to elves, conflict with Goblins, and the dwarven society "the Incidental Square Page" has no access to copper.  Information about other dwarven civs in the area might be useful.
