Metal Bins
« on: January 31, 2011, 09:35:51 am »

I looked in the raws and saw that platinum had almost twice the density as lead. Does this mean that a platinum bin would move even less than a lead bin? I don't want my cotton candy to go anywhere but I don't have galena in this embark.

Live long if you can, and prosper by any means necessary.  Any means, Urist.  So pull that lever, or by Armok, I'll lock you outside come next siege.
He who plays with dwarves must take care that he does not become a dwarf.  And when you stare into DwarfFort, Dwarffort stares back into you.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Don't you have other metals for bins? Platinum is one of the rarest there are. Also: what do you mean by move less? As in, be slower to move?

I stored my weapons and armor in lead bins in the last fort I did, and when I came back as an adventurer none of it had budged a single square. Even the adamantine weapons were in the "vault" I'd built, on the exact spot where I'd left them. Lead's good enough - using platinum would be a waste of a valuable metal.

EDIT: Whoops, didn't see you had no galena. Well, in that case platinum would probably do what you want, if you're willing to use the platinum for that instead of valuable stuff. Go for it, use the platinum. If lead doesn't move, platinum shouldn't.

I see, I didn't know about that. Anyway, the original poster should check for gold on their map. It's also denser than lead and is likely more common in most environments.

I normally use copper for my bins and I never had them move when i came back to the fort as adventurer.

If I have the luxury of a booming metal industry, I also use copper or lead because they are abundant and cheap. Weight be damned.

Yeah, I've got so much lead right now that I don't even know what to do with it. That's what I get for embarking on limestone and granite. I'm not exactly drowning in copper, though.

Gold is also a possibility - and there is usually plenty of gold on a given map.
