Dwarf Fortress in 3D
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:10:51 am »

Notch said that he was inspired by Dwarf Fortress when he made Minecraft and that he wanted to make it similar. Even though I think Notch has lost "his vision" for Minecraft in way of accomodating to the "Moar cake, Moar pixel art" people, what if Notch made a 3D Fantasy Simulator akin to Adventure Mode? I personally hope the devs of DF somehow incorporate 3D in the next installment Dwarf Fortress but then again that will probably never happen.

Sounds like a good idea.

This again? Let's address the key point's fast.
1) Although heavly inspired by DF in it's initial stages, MC is not DF.
2) You are allowed to compair two things of differing propertys. It's how you form opinions.
3) You are allowed to have an opinion, for example 'I think Dwarf fortress is better then Minecraft'
4) Notch changed he's artistic veiws, he is allowed.
5) Toady has kept the same artistic veiws, he is allowed.
6) Notch charges for he's game. He works hard on it, and is allowed.
7) Toady gives out he's game for free, even though he also works hard on it, he is allowed.

Anything I missed?

Yes, you didn't respond to the actual question and made up an argument that the OP wasn't trying to make. Good otherwise.

Let's face it, things were without question going that way, now we have been there and come back, and it dosn't have to happen!

Oh, in that case:

  • People have the right to use ASCII or tilesets.
  • Goblin Camp is simply an ASCII RTS inspired by DF, nothing more.
  • Don't bring up Khazad.
  • We're psychopaths, get over it.
  • Don't bring up the last adventure of Obok Meatgod.
  • The game's in alpha, Toady will work on the interface eventually. Calm down.
  • Don't like the graphics, play something else.
There, now the thread is safe!

Thank god that is over!
But anyway. 3D in next installment? And I thought I was crazy! The dev list is so long that if we ever see it all done, we will need our kids to read the screen for us because as old men our eye sight would have failed.

Way to talk about something that never was mentioned in this thread. When I say next installment, I mean the next game Dwarf Fortress game which should be the third in the series.

Huh, I never even thought about Armok III. I dunno if Toady will ever get around to it, Armok II is in his will. Armok I was in 3D, and... that didn't go well.

Well, you mentioned Minecraft, and that has a history of going south.
As for the third installment of slaves to Armok, I don't plan on living that long. If we ever see slaves III, it will not be soon.

I for one would love to see a random model generator to go along with DF's random elder god generator.

Slaves III might exist eventually, but it seems unlikely. Slaves II came to be because the framework of Slaves I was too limiting.
Dwarf Fortress is designed such that it is not limiting. And shit gets rewritten all the time in order to be better. I see no reason why Salves to Armok II would not merely be made perfect.
If 3d were to be added, it would be post 1.0 (obviously) and it would require somebody to write code that could generate models from the raws. That is unlikely to come to pass, as things look now, but of course there's really no way of knowing what sort of technology we might have ten years from now. More likely is the possibility that some far-future incarnation of Stonesense might get fused with the base game. But that's still not looking very likely.

Well for one thing, "he's" is a contraction of "he is". The word you want is "his".

Fun fact: Attacking somebodys gramma or spelling constitutes a straw man argument.

You seem to be confused on the definition of strawman argument. Besides, the only one arguing is you.

Oh, yeah:
   8.  Don't mention Minecraft.

A strawman argument is when somebody attacks your argument in a way that does not address the point of the argument. Such as saying 'Your too ugly to make a propper argument, therefor you are wrong!' or changing the subject of the argument by taking it out of context.

Also, that's no fun! Threads are boring without any level of conflict, it's just a bunch of people sitting about nodding their heads! Debate does not need to be heater or aggressive.
