Dwarf stuck in bath/ramp
« on: January 30, 2011, 02:47:47 am »

Here's an interesting question.

I channeled a "bath" in front of my fortress/barracks so that soldiers soaked in gore would bath whenever they return back to my main fort. It worked great! A 5x1 bath filled with 2 depth worth of water.

So winter came and it froze over, no biggie. Once it thawed, I dumped the excess water into a nearby drained murky pool... Then I realise one of my dwar seemed to be taking a VERY long prolonged bath... Then the squad was demobilised.. and reactivated later to kill a cavern wildlife..... and the dwarf didn't move. Apparently, it's now stuck inside. I then observed that no dwarves would walk across my bath anymore...

So, any idea how to
a: Get the dwarf out?
b: Reactivate my bath?

Is the water depth too deep? Is it a ramp problem?

Looks like some weird freezing/thawing bug. I'll assume there's up ramps at the left and right side of the bath. I guess the ice somehow destroyed these ramps or made them unusable. I would try digging an up ramp below the soldier or channeling new ramps to the left and to the right of him. Then I would get rid of that bath, as freezing water kills everyone inside it when it freezes, and make another one inside.

I put baths at the entrances to my extremely elaborate bedroom facilities and into the entrances of my barracks for the military chaps.  Try that!

:D Something for my next attempt then:D
Hmm...... that's something to do in my other fort. A mist generator AND a bath! IT would save oodles of time walking about:D

As for freezing, I made the terrain "inside". According to the wiki, that shouldn't make it freeze anymore.

Last edit: Can't figure out why the ramps got inactivated, so, ultimately, I razed them and rebuilt it. Shrugs...

Where does it say that Inside things don't freeze? It shouldn't; that's wrong. Things need to be Underground to be protected from freezing. Just putting a roof over some area doesn't help.

I've seen a bug happen where, when water thaws, the tile it was in doesn't get set as Outside, even if there's nothing now above it besides open air. Maybe the game thinks there was still an ice floor over the top of your ramps that blocks dwarves from going up them.

If he was looking at the wiki, it only mentioned making a roof to stop evaporation.  I don't usually play in colder biomes, so I never thought to mention that tubs might freeze over.  I've added the appropriate warnings about this issue to the wiki so that people know to be careful not to build outdoor bathtubs in biomes where water can freeze.

In the mean time, yeah, I would look for anything that made the ramp stop working (invisible floors, destroyed ramps, ice blocking the way, etc.).

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

I came across a ramp problem when I was building a water tower, if you have a ramp that's besides a wall the goes up into another wall, dwarves won't use it. There needs to be an open area where the dwarf is standing and where the dwarf is going, if not they can only go down.

At least I'm assuming this is correct my tower went like this: (F=floor R=ramp on floor r=ramp below)
 f1       f2
   RFF    rFF
   FFF    FFF
   FFr     FFR

Except for the top floor they were surrounded by walls; when my dwarf got to the bottom he couldn't get back up. I had to wind up digging staircases on the side for him :/
