Indeed, I'll enjoy that feature too when it comes. IIRC the person behind the wizard mod has somewhat gotten around this by making a custom reaction whereby you 'cast' magic missile which creates a missile in your hand you can then throw. If you don't throw it, it will vanish

you could just make a syndrome base material that will super heat the air and cause damage around the area if you want it like that?

That might work, though it wouldn't be directed and would explode in all directions I believe.
