dead dwarf's clothing
« on: January 15, 2011, 02:24:52 am »

So I was digging/channeling out an area recently, and I'd forgotten to clear the above area of trees, which resulted in a dwarf being killed by the collapse that ensued. That's not a huge problem, but now I've got this pile of clothes in what was supposed to be a danger room. I tried dumping the items, I tried unforbidding and re-forbidding them. But the clothes are listed as being "owned" by the dead dwarf, and I can't get anyone to throw them away. Any advice? How do I get my dwarves to throw this crap away?

Magma.

Or atom-smashing. If you can't move the clothes, just build the bridge right there. You can always deconstruct it after.

I just tried that - the builder moved all of the clothes out of the way before finishing the bridge  :(

I also tried dumping water onto the clothes poles from above. Since it's winter, the water froze and the clothes were trapped inside. I was hoping that this would destroy the clothes, but once I dug the ice out, the clothes were back...Perhaps if I froze the stuff into ice, but didn't dig it out afterwards and just let it thaw in spring?

Okay, I tried this and it worked. So it's official - if there's something "undumpable," and you freeze it in a block of ice and let the ice thaw naturally, the item will disappear.

You could just encase the clothes in walls and then pour in water and let it freeze (if outside that is) :)

I am going to copy the chicken entry and rename everything chocobo and make it 100x the size of a normal chicken and make it rideable.  Too bad our dwarves probably wont ride them. >_>

For me, the clothes were in a section of ground that I'd just dug out to be exposed to the above-ground - I actually designated the area just above the clothes as a pond and set it to be filled. as soon as the second or so bucket of water hit them, it became an ice wall.

edit - what illanair said is pretty much what I did

The question is, does letting the items thaw actually destroy them, or does it just put them into the untouchable limbo state where they still exist but aren't in any tiles? That status can be unfortunate because the game still keeps track of where they are, making them continue to eat FPS.

I'd suggest building a drawbridge over half of your chamber, raising it, then building a drawbridge over the other half of your chamber, then lowering the first bridge. When the first bridge is built, all the clothes will be moved to the other half of the room. When the second bridge is built, all the clothes will, again, be moved to the other half of the room, but that half is underneath a drawbridge, leaving them properly positioned for atomsmashing.

Back in .28, there was this bug that a lot of the time an item that got moved by water or magma didn't really disappear. Or rather it did disappear, but was still tracked in the inventory, meaning you could zoom to its location and feast your eyes upon an empty tile where your item used to be. If this hasn't been fixed, then this freezing and thawing business is no more a solution that simply hitting the hide button on your item.

Edit: Yeah, what Necro said.

Yeah, after checking the lists, it would seem that the clothes do still exist, but are now simply permanently hidden. Oh well...I guess I won't be doing that again. The dual drawbridge method seems pretty solid, however. I may try that out next time.
