Shogun 2 : Total War
« on: January 06, 2011, 12:16:15 pm »

So, yeah, latest Total War game, coming out on the 15th March (10 god damn days after my birthday). Sequel to the original Shogun Total War (which was amazing), and hopefully will be even better. :p

Not all that much info on it yet that I could find, feel free to link me to some.

Hell yeah!, looks so much better :) it's not just about fighting this time, each general, assassins or family heads have skill trees and get better skills, you have hero units which and amazing powerful and you only play as the family head this time YOU are the head of the family and thus must make decisions and keep all you family and generals loyal to your cause. The game is much deeper this time with alot to to outside of battle

I think it's just one man units that are as tough as a full regiment or very powerful general cav. Would still be annoying, and more than a little idiotic for the first one, but it wouldn't be infuriateingly so.
Still, here's hopeing Shogun 2 adds what I've wanted since I first played Total War. Cavilry who can actuilly dismount, at a cost to their effectiveness perhaps, but haveing extra infantry for a seige would be invaluable.

Yeah it's just one guy.. But hero units also have a weakness, and come on a regiment of archers all blasting arrows into him would take him down, hero units are tough but they also have drawbacks

Hey, my birthday is 8 days after yours!

At some point I'll buy it, I wanna see if it's a let down like Empire or not. If it is, I'll see if there are any decent mods, but it looks quite promising.

It is still terribly dumb since stuff like that just flat out didn't happen during historical battle. Japan or not. A general or leader without his well trained retinue is just another loser that should die from one stab.

Unless this is implemented very tactfully it will make battles lose all resemblance of realism.

What I would really hate to see is a lone samurai charging into a clusterfuck. That would just be way too gamey for the Total War series battles.

I hope this just means that important characters will no longer be tied to their units. That would be okay, useful even. But if they seriously go charging into combat by themselves or even worse TAKING ON WHOLE UNITS then that will be just so wrong, considering the series.

I hate this hero idea. But as I won't buy it anyway... make it available on linux dammit. And on a 2gz dual core... with a gforce 9300.. laptop... Herm so you know, I won't buy it.

I hope the hero won't be too big in the campaign, just a little plus for the multiplayer mode. The total war series was always supposed to be realistic to a point.

Hero Units: - These are not one man armies that destroy everything that opposes them. These are highly ranked elite units, available at the top of the tech tree who exemplify a mastery of a given martial technique (E.g. sword fighting). They are able to take on other heroes, and are naturally very powerful against groups of enemies but are not invincible game-changers. These figures are also based on true historical accounts of great fighters who founded schools of combat, not myths that take on whole armies and win.

According to a dev.

I don't know how I feel about them.

I mean, Japanese samurai against a bunch of peasants DOES make sense. Even a single samurai could probably slaughter a lot of peasants.

Yea, I think that may be the idea. I guess they could also charge into a load of enemies engaged in battle with another unit and act as a sort of more versatile cavalry unit, but with a bit less damage. They could also be big demoralisers of the enemy and give morale to your own armies.

I'd somehow expect that 'you' need to provide the hero with the troops/support... at least to optimize hero impact.
Into the fray they go, as the vanguard charges into the battle line, with the hero at the very front.

Heroes need no bodyguards and its equals do not play second fiddle.

This could be a good idea.  If implemented well.

Oh yea.  Better AI instead of gobs of free money for AI...  My biggest beef with this series...
