Fellow Dwarf Fortress Addicts,

If any of you are also interested in a classic strategy game with deep substance and shallow graphics called Anacreon, let me know.  We're getting together some games soon.

Granted, it is a good game, and this is posted in the correct place.

Anacreon's an alright 4x. Made by th'same fellow that does Transcendence, I do believe. I wouldn't call it very deep, though, unless it's th'kinda' deep that folks call Chess. It's fairly stripped down, as 4xes go. Not terribly many moving parts. I likes me my research and configurable ships :-\

Transcendence is pretty awesome. Not a 4x, but still.

Don't be a jerk, inteunsio.

And thanks Akura and Frumple for your contributions.

Anacreon is a pretty crappy single player game, but it's not meant to be played that way, really.  The dynamics of a good player vs. player game are incredible.

There's certainly a lot more to it than chess, but I think you have something there, Frumple.  It's extremely slow-paced, with a good game taking perhaps, several months and maybe 20 minutes a day.

I think some of the new scenarios and the web-based play really give it a new lease on life.

He wasn't being a jerk.

Its not an unfair assumption for the poster to be a bot if their first post was an advert.  Its happen before. It'll happen again.

If you're not a bot, or a paid forum advertiser person, then welcome to the forum.

It's considered rude when your first post here looks like an attempt to bump page hits for something. Even if you're well-meaning, it's still rather rude.

Don't be a jerk, inteunsio.
As others have pointed out, he isn't being a jerk. You registered for the forum and your first action was to advertise a game, this makes you look like a rabid fan or advertising bot. The fact that you have only posted once in one other forum contributes to this feeling.

Welcome to the forum, try not to overreact.

On topic: I tried the game. I don't like it. Seems shallow and poorly done.

Well, it's not exactly hard to figure out that I'm not a robot.

For one, I posted a fairly un-botish post before this one.

Furthermore, it's an appropriate subject in the appropriate category.

If he was suspicious, he could have asked.  He instead asserted my "robotness" as fact in ALL-CAPS like a twelve-year old.

When someone pointed out that his logic might be shaky, he ignorantly shrugged it off and stuck to the idea that I'm some kind of odd noob.

Apparently, I'm an incredibly sophisticated robot drumming up support for a 25 year-old game that's available for free, contains no advertisements, and brings in no advertising revenue.

But hey, if we're making stuff up, I declare that you're both Iranian spies from Pluto and you're here to steal all of our underpants - and I'll follow you around the forum making that claim in all-caps.

PS - if you're not reading some mighty thick sarcasm in all of this, you just don't understand robot humor very well.  Spies from Pluto rarely do.

The part you're missing is that he didn't actually think you were a spambot, he was joking.

And now you're acting like a jerk.

A seriously poor showing for your first entry into the community. Calm down, take a breath, and stop being so defensive.

So my bit about under-pants-stealing spies from Pluto was a serious, personal attack, but the odd accusations made against me were clearly jokes?

*sigh*

Not that it's serious, but I don't think anyone else thought it was a joke.  Many chimed in to support the validity of the claim and I didn't notice any chuckling.

On a different note, Forsaken, I doubt you played a game in an hour that takes a month to play.  I'm fairly certain that your assessment was a random attack on something you don't yet know anything about.  And that's... well, it's pretty hard to understand.

I wasn't aware that there was some minimum number of posts I had to make in the "other games" category before I started talking about... other games.  Clearly, this means we should put up a sticky to prevent others from wandering down this terribly rude path.

But if the claim is that I haven't properly done my time in supporting DF, before coming on here, I've been an avid DF player and watcher of this forum for the last year and a half or so, have recruited a few new players, and am a proud donor to Bay 12.  :)

But if we're done with all of our "shame-on-yous," finger-wagging, etc., etc., let's move on, shall we?

There's Goblins to kill and Elves to drive insane.

I never said you made a serious personal attack. And yes, I am fairly certain he didn't actually think you were a spam bot.

I can't speak to what others thought, but we do have an odd sense of humor here.

You misunderstood. I have played this game before, your post wasn't the first I've heard of it. I didn't enjoy it then. I don't even have it on my computer right now, so rest assured I didn't run out and download it, stare at the menu, and then decide to insult it just to annoy you.

Eh, no there isn't a minimum number of posts. It's just a strange decision to register for a new forum JUST to promote a game. It doesn't bother me really. A quick search would reveal that the game has been mentioned probably a half dozen times on the forum already. I'm glad you like the game, and you're obviously free to post about it.

Nobody has made any such claim. All I see is you being hyper defensive and sarcastic.

Yes please. Welcome to the forum, try not to take us so seriously.

Edit: I looked back and here is where I last heard about the game, on this very forum, several months ago. I'd played it before then as well. I'm not saying it's a bad game, just a bit shallow for me. Then again I'm one of the few who actually enjoy a game like Aurora.

Sure - I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on a lot of that.

As for Anacreon being on the forums already, that's good to hear.  I looked for it, but used the search bar withing a sub-forum and assumed that I was searching the whole thing.  Not so much.

And as for your love of Aurora - that's pretty awesome.  I'm trying to get up the nerve to jump into that one, but it's still pretty scary-looking for me.

Some time later, I'm going to start or revive a forum thread that's actually about Anacreon.  This one has hopelessly devolved from that path.

Don't even consider Aurora unless you're ready to sit down and spend a lot of time learning it. I wouldn't say I love the game, I have the same sort of feelings for it as I do SpaceChem... I love its complexity, and hate it at the same time. I enjoy the customization depth you have with Aurora, but at the same time I don't want to design an entirely new fire control system, sensor, turret gearing system, and laser weapon when my technology progresses. Ah well...

When/if you make/revive the new thread let us know I suppose. Or ask the mods to clean this one up. Or just use this one anyway. Misunderstandings and mistakes do happen. :D
