Revolt in tunisia
« on: January 05, 2011, 09:20:13 am »

Well student of Tunisia riot over economical problem, and no struggle for democracy. Anonymous got in btw http://www.techwatch.co.uk/2011/01/05/anonymous-goes-after-tunisian-government/

For those who don't know, Tunisia is a dictatorship, quite wealthy for the region and having a good educational system, who have strong ties with Europe and America.
There have been request for democracy for quite a while now, but the economical problems have been the spark that lighted the booze stock.
Anyone got information or question on the matter?

Discussion of any other country political system forbidden, except when it relate closely with Tunisia. (It's ok to discuss ties of Tunisia with another country, but not to get too deep in this country internal politics.).

You can also discuss anonymous actions if you like, as long as it is related loosely with the matter at hand.

Edit : I have a lot of trouble finding articles in English carrying the same tones that french one's. Any other French speaker
reporting that?

EDIT AND WARNING: document bellow are very good but classified (wikileak cable) use at your own discretion.

Wow, those are very good documents, thank you very much.
I knew Tunisia was corrupt, but these help understand the widths of the phenomenon as well as our exact relation with them (cordial).

Just want to note that both of those documents are classified SECRET, if you don't have the clearance you shouldn't view them.  Not that I can stop you.

Thanks for the warning. I do have clearance, but I'm not allowed to view them on THIS machine. And they actually take that seriously.

There's pretty much not an Arab state that I can think of that doesn't have a tremendous gap between rich and poor, larger than even what we see in the "decadent" West. It's in some ways a holdover from the medieval period, when the Sultan/Emir/Caliph/whatever lived...well, like a king, while the rest of the people were peasants.

Even in tiny oil-rich states like Brunei and the UAE, the wealth is not divided anywhere close to equitably.

Yes, we should have mentioned that, I wouldn't want anyone loosing his job over it.

Obviously, but the interesting thing is that it's rioting right now, and is asking for democracy.
I'm also wondering what's anonymous does in this thing. And I am interested by the fact they don't seem to use /b/ anymore.
After all anonymous and /b/ are not exactly the same thing.

Anon appears to be a 4chan core with random people be recruited.  It's a fairly large movement in the tens of thousands right now.  I predict that it will grow, and eventually we'll see them using botnets as people with that capability are recruited to their cause.

*Once more people with programming and networking expertise are recruited they'll most likely do more damage than just DDOS attacks.

Arresting children would just be wrong, but what else are authorities expected to do.  Terrorist, no, Hacking, possibly, they don't have the same motives as terrorists, they are basically an illegal online demonstration.  Its basically a nonviolent organization.

Also want to note that the core of the group appears to have more maturity, Indicating that they are most likely adults.

Then it may become interesting, because it's their parents and friends that will become involved.

But more likely, they will take one and sentence him to 5 years of prison and 1000000$ of fine to frighten the others.

EDIT : Arresting European over protest in Tunisia? Or Americans? I don' see it happening.
Oh and please don't overuse stereotypes. I don't think they are even remotely useful. Beside they must be in the twenties now.

Don't get confused.

Same here, clearance, but no reason to view them. I didn't see a FOUO but doesn't mean I should be poking around when I don't have a reason to.

Actually, you can still get a government job. The public at large is allowed to view them, but CURRENT government employees would have to break all sorts of rules to access secret documents through other channels.

At least, that's how I understand it to work. (From what they've explained to my dad in the letters he's gotten about it)

This Tunisia cable was pretty interesting, as far as our relationship with them goes:
