Do dwarves only get attached to weapons and shields?

Or do they sometimes get attached to armor, too?

I've seen my dwarves get attached to their chain leggings, so I'd say so.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

Well darn.  Is there any way to get people to drop attached items?

Attach them to a cat.
Then kill the cat.
Ensue tantrum spiral.
Abandon fortress.
No more problems!

Sure, cut the hand holding the object!
... no, seriously, I'd like to know how to do that, too. I got the best metal in the game, and most of my speardwarfs are attached to iron or steel ones.  >:(

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

set the weapon/armor you want your dwarf to take off to be dumped.
Eventually, another dwarf will come and grab the beloved piece off him, and dump it, after which you can equip whatever you like in it's place.
It helps if the dwarf to be stripped is standing still (has no jobs)

I have seen dwarves get attached to a gauntlet or even a jaguar leather cloak. The latter wasn't even part of the uniform.

I think anyone can be attached to anything. I've had random dwarves become attached to their caps.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

There was a topic a while ago about a dwarf becoming attached to his hippo

I had a forgotten beast equip a mitten after ripping a childs arm off, after wrestling a dog for several years he became attached to it.

"Oh jeez...these pants...they're just...so comfy! You guys! Guys! These pants are awesome! Seriously...I think I'm gonna name these pants one day..."

Keep in mind that the dwarves are essentially alcoholic toddlers, and act accordingly.

Can't you just go to the military screen, tell him to equip a different, specific item of your choice?  And you can forbid the other one/dump it, too. Always works for me.

Dwarfs will have access to the internet in version .99.99, when even Toady cannot push the game further. They will then discover the Bay12 Games website, creating an infinitely recursive chain of realities that will eventually reach critical mass and coalesce into DF 1.0, emerging from their web-based cocoon like some kind of meme-encrusted chrysalis.
