An elven caravan has arrived from wherevertchacallit!

Seconds later, the river melts and they fall in and drown. You'd think they'd figure out not to send caravans to a fort only accessable via a river that's only frozen until late spring.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I weep for those fallen.

There was a caged giant eagle...

That is terrible. The eagle, I mean.

Cages are magical. Animals inside them are in suspended animation and safe from all harm that doesn't destroy the cage itself. Just wait until the river freezes over again in the winter, channel out the ice and recover your new pet.

The Eagle should still be alive if it was caged, right?  Or is that only magma?

Provided it didn't die during the journey, it will be perfectly safe in the cage so you can dig it out of the ice and get it back (provided the ice won't destroy items when it freezes)

It definitely doesn't. Couple winters ago a few goblin corpses ended up in the stream. I couldn't be assed to recover the corpses or their stuff, but when the stream froze over I just dug out the ice and struck goblinite.

Yeah, whenever the north end of the river thaws I get to see the pile of dwarf corpses that's been piling up there.

I don't know if they had any animals or not. I'll check next time I play.

I thought animals in animal cages died if the cage was encased in ice.

Wouldn't animals acquired that way be listed as Friendly rather than as members of the fort though?

A few versions ago, I had a dwarf somehow claim an animal from the Depot as a pet even before I bought it. The result was that he was caught in a perpetual loop of releasing his pet only to have another dwarf toss it into a cage.

So even if the Eagle survived its cryosleep, it'll just be tossed back into a cage the minute it's released. I guess you might be able to tie them up and use them as breeding stock though.

I care deeply. Or atleast enough to buy a round of booze in celebration.
