A troublesome aquifer...
« on: December 16, 2010, 08:04:17 pm »

I've just embarked in some wetlands and most of the soil layers have some sort of aquifer. Most of them are not an issue, but the lowest soil layer has it covering the whole thing. How can i get past this thing? I can't smooth the wall because it is not stone.

Build a wall.

Everyone else will probably tell you to cave in.

I'll give it a try and tell you how it turns out.

I like to channel 2 tiles of aquifer at a time, build a pump over it that drains back into the same aquifer and build 1 wall section before moving the pump along and opening a new tile.  Slow and steady is safest :)

It seems to be working, but very slowly. At least I got loads of space to work with.

It turns out the first rock layer was an aquifer too. I give up, it isn't worth the hassle. I might continue if I could pump the water out of that layer, but I'd have to do even more work on the upper aquifer. I had a backup plan to do a cloth economy instead, so I guess I'll do that.

And that leads to all sorts of fun if you forget your map has aquifers - like flooding your entire tomb Z level ::)

I am going to copy the chicken entry and rename everything chocobo and make it 100x the size of a normal chicken and make it rideable.  Too bad our dwarves probably wont ride them. >_>

Yeah getting down through two this way means completely securing the first with a wall and then repeating the whole process, it makes getting rid of the water for the second a bit trickier since i can never get it to get back into the aquifer fast enough so i usually pump it up again into the drainage cut for the first level so that its out of the way.
