it seems that most people want the hardest option:
different stuff, boats require an additional stage of waterproofing (wax, fat, etc.) - 5 (41.7%)

people don't like same skills, different materials

It's dwarf fortress, we always go for the hardest root.

bumping 'cause I feel this is important, for several arcs. such as army, caravan, even adventurer.

as a method for water propulsion we could use enormous corkscrews as a possibility, also some land vehicles use corkscrews too for all terrain transportation. although regular screw pumps might be good enough for water propulsion.

EDIT: wow, the results:
1/3 want the hardest possible option (different construction parts and waterproofing).
1/6 want same stuff with the additional stage of waterproofing.
1/6 want different stuff and different skills.
1/3 want it to be the same stuff, period.

I don't see why boats and land vehicles shoudn't be made from the same things. Also wooden boats were usually water proofed by stuffing treated cloth between the wood. Did you know it's actually possible to make a lead zepplin?

good points. even the zepplin (yes I did. including paint from heavy plastics. but what I mean here is boats can be made out of metal too  )

I foresee problems with amphibious vehicles if they are made from different parts... after thinking a bit I'm leaning to same stuff with a waterproofing stage.

well it shouldn't all be different but I mean boats should require maybe premade parts, like hulls, and ribbing, where as carts require wheels?  That way they are all wood, but are made from 'different' items?
