Music (and other stuff) in Russian, Polish, or German
« on: December 02, 2010, 07:15:41 pm »

I am looking for music with lyrics in Russian, Polish, or German.  Discernible pronunciation is preferred, so don't give me opera or screaming metal, please.  Shmoopy is fine.  Militaristic is mostly fine--I don't want to get in trouble for singing/humming the wrong country's national anthem in the wrong place.

As for why, I need to start training my ear if I want to have any hope of learning these languages in the next few years.

Thanks much~

Sidenote: I'm also looking for interesting novels/TV shows/other resources in these three languages, so if you know of any, please feel free to derail away.  If you think this belongs in Life Advice I can put it there, but I'd prefer not to for obvious reasons.

Be sure to record and upload your own version, if you end up singing it.  At the very least it might be entertaining ;)

KYPCK(Kursk) is a Finnish doom metal (not screaming) band that signs in Russian.

Try playing games like Men of War, Metro 2033, or the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, which all have Russian voice actors (Sometimes to hilarious results in Men of War)

Huh, thanks.  That's a good start.

I'd sugest Rammstein or Megaherz. Both metal and German, but neither screaming.

Seconding Rammstein.

Also, if you like this style of German metal, you should also try Eisbrecher.

A more industrial route would also be Die Krupps.

So I hear you're searching for the perfect blend of the German language and... disco. I've got it riiiiight here. Dschinghis Khan, circa 1979. Fresh stuff, too.

Dschinghis Khan It's the song they named themselves after, and it is rockin'.
Moskau
Hadschi Halef Omar
RomA bit different style, but awe-inspiring nonetheless.

There are some other ones (look at the user profile of the guy who put up Rom, it has quite a few), but they're from the later era where they went back to 'normal' music instead of crazy costume parties. Thor lend you might if you hear their 'revival' music from 2006; only one of the original members is alive, and they sing like an old person.

Try some Subway to Sally. I am reliably informed it is German.

Also, Oomph, the band that inspired Rammstein.

Regarding german music:

Try "Die Ärzte" and their side projects "Farin Urlaub" and "Bela B.".
They have a lot of different songs, most of which are humorous (at least that's true for the first one) and a good mix of happy and sad songs.

Singing is very clear and you shouldn't have problems in finding lyrics.

"Sportfreunde Stiller" is another band, which features plenty of good songs, as far as I can remember.

As or German books:
Try any translated novel from Terry Pratchett.
From my experience it's well done and comes very close to the original.
Reading the german version and then the english original has taught me a lot.

You could also try any work from Franz Kafka.
