The WHO officially recognized gaming addiction as a behavioural disorder.

tbh maybe some of them should. It'd be really hard to draw the line on what's acceptable and what's not, but just like tobacco companies, games companies know this and are profiting off it.

That said I have no idea where the line is. There isn't really games companies claiming that gaming is healthy for you or anything. So it's not as easy as cigarette companies.

In fact, for the last few years at least some gaming companies have been including reminders to take breaks every once in a while. I know a lot of first-party Nintendo games have been doing it.

It sounds hard to sue a video game company for damages. Unlike tobacco, video games don't involve sticking chemicals in someone's body that cause cancer and create a dependence. You can still get a psychological addiction to video games, but you can form a psychological addiction to all kinds of stuff including food and exercise.

All I understood was adsense meets intermittent break suggestions, streamed directly into your brain game.

... seriously though, you just said that some games have been including the occasional break reminder in their stuff, right? I extrapolated, first to more amusing and/or dystopian results, then to that plus the future of marketing.

The ancient carpet in my computer room started coming up, so I decided to give it a hand and pulled it all up (I'll either paint the floor or pick up a cheap area rug later). After I get done cleaning up, I get everything back together and sit down in my chair. Apparently I sit down pretty hard, because on the now-wooden floor I flew to the far side of the room and hit the wall.

The reminders have been in games forever

<martinuzz tries a Richard Ridings voice and fails>

"Your nocturnal perseverance has earned you a hidden gaming tip: GO TO BED.."
"You know that low, broad, downy-soft item of furniture in the next room? It has the power to cure fatigue and restore vitality"
"Surely, even Dungeon Keepers must retire to a Lair of some description?"

Even Nethack, a game that predated modern internet, punishes you slightly if you load up a character after 10PM.

I just came here to mention that the bay12 forums is the nicest, most welcoming, most friendly, and most polite internet group I know of. I love it here. And yet, avaeryone is either a phsycopath, mad, or just visiting*.

Pretty accurate so far. I play DF or SS13 and I will cut your face off and make it into a wall decoration, but I am super helpful and polite the whole time.

See? The entire community, including myself, is both sociopathic and polite at the same time.
