Ah hah ha,
I used to do the same kind of shit, sometimes in the food industry, yah lose your fucking mind?!
"I have a marker so what do you expect! The scream? I'm in the food industry! If I was a dead famous artist you would know about me! But you don't and I want to get in your pants. So here is a smily face cause I'm a serial killer shy"

Personaly I think you should go there more, could be a trap good time?
Maybe do a test, ask if others get smily faces.
Maybe wear a costume and see if they still draw smilys.
You havn't done enough research into these "friendly" humans.

Do it
What if the smiley face is ironic, what does it mean? What if there's a double smiley, is it standard? Have you done anything to warrant friendliness, or are they just providing a swell-service in the hopes that someone actually tips them the money they need to subsist?

But Yoink, you can't stop going now. If you just vanish, you'll emotionally wound the friendly employees who will then be left second-guessing every kind action they ever want to take again. The fear of driving away another like they drove you away will subtly haunt them for the rest of their lives, jeopardizing each moment of human warmth they would have brought into the world.

"Will this one hate me and run away, just like that regular did", they'll probably say to themselves. By the end, death will be a release from the cold cruelty of this heartless world.

So, in short, you have to keep going to the Mexican restaurant until you get a marriage proposal or else you will ruin the lives of hundreds if not thousands of people by proxy.
You MONSTER
Up until the death part, this is something I actually worry about to some extent :'(

Oh humpf. Feeling anxiety and then getting thoughts of avoiding what could possibly be the cause doesn't make you a monster. Anxiety happens, and the many ways we can face it are very dynamic. And there's the usual concern of 'how shall I interpret this' being a theme with you.

In that one situation--say thank you and don't attribute any added idea other than 'this is a symbol of friendliness, and maybe even a  personal gesture' as it isn't written anywhere that one should put smilies on the customer's food products or containers. It's the anxiety poking a response.

And/or those smilies are warnings of 'this is spicy and hot. I think you'll enjoy it!'.
That, or I'm missing a joke or humor again. :I

I was talking politics with someone who I will call IB. He called Communists and socialists, etc., a cancer on humanity. This isn't that terrifying on its own - people do think that.

But then I learned today about the steps toward genocide. The second is dehumanization - painting a group as a disease or infestation upon a society. And guess which political group Hitler exterminated like the Jews? That's right. Communists.

okaaaaaaay

goodbye, IB, nice talking with you

Yeah, but the truly terrifying thing is that we liberals do that to people too (well, I do sometimes :P)  Reducing them to "bigots" usually.  It's not *equivalent*...  But it's definitely the thing that scares me the most about "regressives" or whatever.  They look liberal, but they lack the liberal need to constantly say "Of course, these are people, they're just misguided.  And now to consider how we might be wrong!"

That compassion and self-doubt is what makes us the goodies :P  But a lot of new-age "liberals" don't have that...  Terrifies me.

I actually enjoy considering how I might be wrong. The terror, for one, of having your entire philosophy shaken at its foundation - that is an exhilarating feeling.

Also, reducing people to bigots also has the side effect of reducing bigotry to bigots. Take racism. Racism is actually a pervasive, institutional problem - and yet we have made this group of "teh racists," and blamed all racism on them. As long as we scowl at the racists, we can't be racist, right? Which completely ignores how racism actually works!

My bedroom's smoke detector tripped last night. False alarm, but this is also a sad because I've drilled myself to wake up completely when I hear it, meaning I couldn't fall asleep for the rest of the night due to my insomnia.
