Or like Doom 3, which tries to scare the shits out  of you (what sorta spacemarine couldnt hold a gun the same time as a torch?) but there are so many things to shoot its kinda lost in a sea of gore, noise and guns.

I loved Metro 2033. It got the right mix of nightmarish, saddening, and hilarious. It's got patience and is willing to let the horror slowly seep into you over time. Hell, an entire level (Ghosts) is scary while having absolutely no enemies. Not by jump scares either, just thanks to crushing existential horror.

I have never felt terrified in Cataclysm. I've felt afraid, yes, and kinda depressed, but never scared out of my wits.

I think the scare factor of C:DDA is more about the threat of losing a character that you put a bunch of effort into, like hardcore Diablo or tons of other roguelikes such as nethack. C:DDA is a good portrayal of how shit hits the fan.

Randomly turning a corner and coming face to face with a jabberwock on day 1 can be a bit of a shocker. Randomly turning a corner and coming face to face with a jabberwock on day 63 without your handy-dandy bow or any method of combustion can be even more shocking.

Well, I don't know exactly how I feel during Cataclysm. I tend to totally zone out when I play roguelikes, thinking about it.

I remember watching a web series on Newgrounds of all places called Broken Saints, that had a moment that thoroughly scared the shit out of me so bad it turned me off from the series, which I actually kind of regret cause it was a really good story.

I won't spoil it, but it was at an important, dramatic junction in the series. Shit was getting tense, everybody was being confronted by the big bad in a way where everyone had no clue what was going down. There were a couple of pretty decent jump scares throughout the series so I'm on high alert for them, cause I'm just so susceptible to jumpscares that it's absurd and it's usually at these dramatic points where they get pulled out. So I'm really strung out, trying to mentally and emotionally prepare myself for the jumpscare cause I can just FEEL it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen any damn second now, but every time I'm like "Here it comes!", it doesn't happen and I get a little bit more high strung waiting for it.

The music is gradually getting more tense and more dramatic as the characters talk between themselves, but then out of nowhere there's something revealed that was not expected at all, something grisly and horrifying. The camera rested staring at the floor, but then SLOWLY panned up to show it to me, little by little. Something like this was never alluded to, so I'm trying to grasp what it was, still prepared for the jumpscare that never comes, and as the camera SLOWLY pans up to reveal more of it I finally start to grasp what it is. When it's revealed entirely, and I fully understand what I'm looking at, I'm scared so shitless I just closed out of the window as fast as I could. And that was my last experience with Broken Saints, that memory still sits haunting the back of my imagination, I'll never forget it.

Haha I know the guy who created that series, he would love to hear this story.

You should give it another try, after Newgrounds they got a deal with FOX to produce an enhanced edition with slightly improved art and effects and a full proper voice cast.

I heard a loud skittering in the bushes outside my patio that sounded reminiscent of feet shuffling through gravel and stone. Freaked me the hell out, especially since I was getting dressed at the time.

...My living room is also my bedroom. Don't ask, I'm just glad I don't have neighbors that particularly want to be a part of my life.

It's ok to be paranoid, just be sure it's reasonable and doesn't affect your health.
If you hear it again, start looking up how to make landmines or just dig a pit trap in your patio.

I would go for some glass serrated discs.
