HUEG LIEK XBOX (Biggest Embarks)
« on: November 26, 2010, 04:44:49 pm »

What's the largest embark you ever started with, and actually made it several years through?

I'm pondering embarking on a truly epicly massively huge embark site for !!fun!!.

Not if you have a proper map, a good computer and a popcap.

Amongst others.

16x16 would be great for a Hermit like challenge. You could happily set up several miniforts and have them compete in different activities of megaprojects and warmongering. Dwarf Survivor! Only one magma cannon will fire who will fire theirs first.

6*6
Wow I play it small compared to others.
Suddenly have this unholy urge to find out how to build a stable OS, then break into Toady's house, steal the raw script, and turn into into an OS, therefor avoiding all this crap running in the background and filtering down levels to be processes.

20*20 embark with 200 dwarfs? HERE I FREAKING COME!

WinXP is super lightweight and VERY easy to disable services on.  If I get particularly visciously overlagged (such as major water projects during major invasions, or clowns) I disable every service possible.  I can't print, check the net, or even launch new programs!  (Explorer.exe is shut down too).  It makes a bit of difference, but really, not enough to be worth it unless you are sub-2 FPS

However disabling some services, such as Help&Support and Spoolsv (printing) do help a lot.  Those are unusually hoggy.

Also, kill Java.  KILL IT WITH MAGMA!

Killing background programs can only do so much. Its time we relies that windows IS the background program.
Note to self, get hold of super computer from the LHC and install the DF OS on that. IT MUST BE DONE!

Hahah!

I just embarked on the MAXIMUM possible size!  32x32 I beleive?

Amazingly, it worked!  It's using 1.5 GB of RAM currently.  That's nuts!

I designated some mining and unpaused... waiting...

Also, truth be told, no matter what OS or even computer you use, it IS limited to the speed of the fastest single core.  Until true multicore virtualization combining exists, cores are useless for DF, except to stuff services to another core than DF's.

What part of stealing script and modding it was unclear? Multi threading was in the vision document! MUHAHAHAHA!

A fortress on a full 16*16, with full z layer depth, and 1,000 pop cap. A man can dream.

With Burrows and a good division of tasks, along with good distribution of supplies, you can make separate burrow-caste fortresses. 1 dwarf produces and rules that land. Unfortunately, each one must hold a primary (N)oble task. You can make a central meeting zone for all the mini-forts to meet up at and trade notes (and get medical updates). Of course, you can skip the whole diagnosis thing if DwarfTherapist comes up with (or already has) a medical diagnosis function that does the work of the medical dwarf for you.

This would actually seem like an interesting challenge-megaproject. I think it would be an interesting way to accustom me to 31.xx quickly.
