A physics defying river.
« on: November 25, 2010, 10:18:54 pm »

I just embarked on the cross point of a minor river and river to dam the minor river, 'cause that's what I do.

Frozen solid. No water in sight, but here's what happened with the minor river:

(Note how on the bottom two it creates a mini bio-dome)

Onwards to the major river below:

Down to the ice sheet:

So, the moral of the story is the worldgen likes to screw with us sometimes.

That would be an awesome place for a secret entrance to your base, only accessible when the river is frozen (assuming that there isn't an actual floor beneath there). I must reproduce this phenomenon.
I'm guessing it happens because rivers are flat, so as the hillside drops, the river remains up, so there's a space beneath it.

You know what you must do.
Build an underbank through walls, and build a suspended waterfall. Complete with floodgates!
Alternatively, you could mine it out, floor it up and put a magma trench underneath it to thaw out the river if it doesn't melt.

Either way, that river must flow.
For Armok!

Well that's wierd. Seems that you posted less than a second before me, bumping off the post I made about THE EXACT SAME THING. Scary coincidence.

.....I have no clue how to find the parameters. Someone mind describing it to me?

Press esc then do export local images. In your df folder will appear a file called something like (fortress-name)-param-regionx.txt

I had a map like this several versions ago, except mine was a river dumping into a lake.
My site thawed, which caused huge FPS spikes and cave in reports.

So....  maybe your goal should be to un-dam the river?

A: A very large wall.

Epic waterfall, man. Use it for a ginormous megaproject. Or just upload your save, so the rest of this forum can do so.

Worldgen pararms were posted. Gens just fine in vanilla .18.

It looks like if the ice thawed the river would behave more properly. Except that it would have some tall vertical walls made of sand on either side.

The area under the ice qualifies as underground. If you can roof it in, or if the ice never thaws and you can figure out a way to muddy it, you have a very easily defended underground farm.

Water shouldn't freeze so long as it's underground, right? I'm gonna rig up a magma system to thaw and refreeze the rivers on demand for invaders or elves.

TBH, I think that all dwarf fortress problem solving falls either on the "Rube Goldberg" method, or the "pharaonic" one.

Only a small portion of my embark thaws in summer, nowhere near the ice cave. I've hauled water up from the aquifer to muddy down the grassy underground are beneath the river, and sealed up the open area with ice walls.

The aquifer could be breached by simple freezing climate techniques, but I want my entrance to be pristine. I'm going to drill for magma nearby, and break the aquifer with obsidian.

Thanks for the location.

Can we see a stonesense or some other visualizer for that?

(Assumes you were addressing me)
Here's the top level: (huge image)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The long thing in the middle is the bugged river. The top level was ice with 'river' floor, below that is empty, and below that is 'white sand cavern floor'. On the far side of the river I've carved out an aboveground area, joined it to the tunnel, and walled and roofed it in with ice. On the near side, I have carved and walled but not yet roofed a similar area. One is for safe outdoor farming, the other for outdoor dining and meeting hall, to prevent cave adaptation. To the top right you can see a another portion of river that I have mined for the ice to complete the farming and dining area; the major river is down-left through down-right offscreen.
