can cave spiders be pets
« on: November 20, 2010, 11:34:44 am »

I was wondering this because if you can get them as pets you could make a big chamber for them and they would make tons of webs for you to turn into silk clothes and stuff

Cave spiders, like many vermin creatures, can become pets. As pets, they spend their lives attached to a dwarf or in a trap. To catch them, you need a lot of traps with food inside in the caverns, preferrably in an area where you have seen many cave spider webs.

Relevent wiki article.

Remember to look out for Giant cave spider webs, though, or you may experience Fun.

But it isn't a bug? you catch vermin for food. dwarves eat food. i always thought of it as a feature

only if there is no other food available
the dwarves should not eat captured vermin if there is accessible food

true. i tested this just now and the dwarves refused to touch the vermin ... until they were basically starving.

then, all at once, the dwarves threw themselves at the stockpile. i could imagine the screams of the little rats as they were engulfed... two of the dwarves hate rats.
one of them ate a firefly instead and was content with that. the other "was accosted by a terrible vermin recently"  :P

Giant cave spider webs are not a very good indicator of giant cave spiders. They can show up without them and you may basically never see any even when webs are present.

To address one of the OP's original points, this plan would not allow you to generate a silk farm. The little cave spiders don't actually spin the webs, the webs just generate out of thin air the same way the vermin do. Only GIANT cave spiders can be used to create silk farms, and that is a much more dangerous and complicated project. A decent guide can be found on the wiki.
