Focused:  How does one expect to extract a tax from rural commerce?  Practically, you write it off.
Eh, the term is... something or other (trade?) in kind, iirc, at least for the usual you fix this I fix that type stuff. Far as I can recall you're supposed to go by (local) market value of the services involved. Same as basically everything, really.

Actually practically, people just don't report it and it very rarely causes problems with property tax evaluation or something due to the value of a residence being higher than you've got a paper trail to prove. It's minor income tax fraud, but minor enough and hard enough to prove or track an audit doesn't really care, most of the time. Same with stuff like yard sales or whatev'.

Though the IRS does, at times, care about what's legitimate. There's types of fraud or whatever they're going to bricksock you over if they notice, pretty sure. They're just going to be less pissed off at you in particular if you're treating it as legitimate and handling the whatever like a proper income. Arguably it's an incentive to leave a paper trail for criminal activity so folks are easier to catch, heh.

Property tax evaluation, at least in my state of the USA, consists of someone looking at your property, saying it is worth more than last year, then having to argue with them until it gets restored close to last year's value.  It has nothing to do with what Rolan7 said.

We also have Income Tax, which is generally what we were in fact talking about.
We also have Sales Tax, which I unfortunately brought into the conversation, causing confusion.

Income Tax: You pay the US Government (and your state in most cases) a tax on all the money you earned.
Sales Tax: You pay the State Government (actually some goes to the local government) a tax on each item that you buy/sell.  It's one of those fees that the seller offloads onto the buyer charged by the Government.

Now go file your taxes, you dumb Americans.  The US Government needs to bribe its people not to overthrow it.  :P

It does when what rol was talking about is the reason the appraiser is saying it's worth more :P

There's a handful of other taxes besides property, income, and sales, though, heh. It even varies with locality, because tax prep companies got our legislature by the balls so next to nothing about it is easy or simple, ha.

Like, if you're filing taxes on your cryptocurrency, you've sort of missed the original purpose of crypto...

Ensuring that you cause the maximum amount of environmental damage while scamming people so you can be as cartoonishly evil as possible?

Ah, but you see, it's totally anonymously recorded on a totally public ledger entirely segregated from banks but irrecoverably tied to large entities designed to hold and facilitate the transfer of cryptocurrencies (who frequently hack, scam, and 'lose' currency) (did anyone mention that you can only do, uh, eight bitcoin transactions per second? Across the planet?) to build investment! It's true to the spirit of decentralized currency!

Crypto's missed the original purpose of crypto and it's never going to get adopted in a fashion that'll bring it anywhere near the ideal of crypto. Nobody stops to think about how much stuff they can buy with a microbitcoin, only how many dollars it's worth. Its value is derived entirely on the speculation of rubes that think it will gain value, and its function is to gain value by speculation. It doesn't lead to anything, it doesn't produce anything, it doesn't enable anything- it just consumes electricity on the magnitude of small nations, and it doesn't get any more valuable for it.

Using cool math as the engine to facilitate commerce sounds rad as fuck, but it won't get adopted for the same reasons that your parents go into their insurance office to pay their bills, the same reason that you don't have wifi-enabled LED bulbs in your light fixtures, why PC gaming isn't done predominantly on Linux, why the "Microsoft is calling to remove spyware on your PC" scam works, or why the Segway wasn't a massive hit.

Shit, a Segway is more reparable. You forget a password or your hard drive shits the bed? Goodbye, currency.

I guess, to pull this back to the whole IRS thing- it's probably about as taxable as lottery winnings are, if you'll excuse the hows and whys any given person might gain a tax-significant amount of wealth via cryptocurrencies. It's not like any particular thing is done to create that value, but when you cash it out, the fed wants their pound, right?

Crypto transactions are also extremely easy to track. A lot of illegal porn busts have been made by simply tracking which wallet the crypto went through.

It is anonymous only if you mined the coin yourself into a new wallet. The effort to mine one now is too much for most people (who don't already have bitcoins and wallets), so it's mostly just trades between wallets, completely unanonymous.

I come home from work just after noon today expecting to shovel the inch or so of snow that fell last night, only to discover that despite the below freezing air temperature, the snow banks at the side of the walking path outside my house have been melting in the sun and there are rather significant pools of water forming and subsequently freezing.

I haven’t been particularly assiduous with snow and ice removal this winter so there was already some thick bits of ice near the snow bank that was providing a shaded spot, but took the opportunity to chop away some of the inch thick ice accumulation now melting in the sun in an effort to make it less problematic for neighbours in he habit of walking.

Ice chopping for over an hour as a lefty does not mix well with having a wedding band, and I now have two blisters were the skin of my hand and finger were rubbing against my ring, both of which also apparently burst during my activities.

I really should just leave my neighbours to their icy fate, but they might sue me for it.

My girlfriend broke up with me a while back, citing geographical distance and jealousy that I was able to do more than her. The last is odd, I know, but I can understand it - she was stuck with her parents a lot in the countryside. She did it over text, which was kinda douchey, but I got over it and moved on.

She just messaged me again, right under the whole breakup thing, with 'Hey [my name], how are you?'

Uhhhhhhhhhh huh. I don't know why she's bothering. Presumably the stars are misaligned in the same ways as previously, and honestly I wasn't too happy with how she went about the breaking-up.

I'm currently debating whether or not to reply.

DO NOT REPLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!this was originally in the largest font size, but I wanted the strike out to be more obvious

...unless you already replied, in which case good luck, I support you, I totally don't think you're an idiot.

My rational is that she broke things off casually via text, so you should not let her start up the relationship via text.
If she actually wants to talk, she can learn to use other forms of communication.  It should take more effort to restart the relationship than it took to end it.

I might be projecting my own shit.
I'm the opposite of an expert in these things, but if you are still interested in this girl, you can text "fine" after about 24 hours have elapsed since she texted you.
If she is actually seeking to rekindle the relationship, it puts the burden on her to make an effort.
If she is just worried if you are still alive in all this chaos, it puts her mind at ease and you probably won't hear much else from her.

There’s no harm in replying, though I would hope you know what you want from any interaction if you do. Sounds like she may need to do a bit of growing up, regardless.

From what you posted it appears you have no interest in rekindling anything, perhaps even no interest in even maintaining a friendship, which is understandable. Not replying will obviously achieve that.

From her side, she may realize she’s made an error in breaking up and wants to get back together; she may genuinely be concerned for your well-being; she may have given you time to come to terms with the end of a romantic relationship but thinks highly enough of you that she wants to maintain a friendship. Probably other things that haven’t crossed my mind.

Morbid curiousity dictates you should reply though, just to see what she wants, so long as you keep us informed :p no need to burn a bridge if you don’t have to, I guess, even if she was working on a touch of arson from her side.

I agree with the other posters.
I recently had a similar experience and  she changed her mind again a week later.

As long as you're in the right emotional frame of mind replying is an option... But really, hector's right, know what you're expecting and you won't be blindsided by any potential madness she's thinking of throwing your way. It's usually not terrific news when an ex messages something vague without stating what their own intentions are

Heh. Yeah, good advice all round. I must admit curiosity got the better of me.

I waited a day and replied with 'fine.' She responded just now with 'that's good' and then asked how my job was going. With a blushy smiley face.

Wth ahaha.

When my ex messaged me out of the blue, I responded to her cause I didn’t see the harm in it, had a few boring conversations and then she disappeared again.

The desire that’s fuelling this conversation is fleeting and thus of little consequence. Do what you want with it. Just don’t get back together.

Of course I was the one who initiated the break-up in my relationship so I purged myself of lingering feelings long ago. You are not so lucky so try not to lose control of them. It’s only once in a blue moon that someone actually changes.
