Really tho it depends on your attitude towards debt.  You can own a mid sized car and just make payments forever.  America is structured around the idea every family will have at least 1 car.

Hell, you can buy cars for $200, as long as you’re ok with no temperature contol and the fact that possibly dangerous breakdowns are inevitable.

So does the fact a credit union actually gave me a $13k loan for a (used) car mean im actually poor or not? Because i still dont make enough to afford an apartment in this same city. Id have to split the bill with at least three other people to be able to afford my student loans, car payments, and rent and have just a bit left over for food and stuff. Do i qualify as middle class?

No a car or car loan payment is a different thing, and is often the reason that one ends up as one of us poors.
